The story of a couple in China who sold their house and car to buy a camper to take their 6-year-old son, who is about to enter first grade, on a trip around the country is attracting attention on social media in this country.
Yang Qiang and his wife, from central China's Henan Province, decided to postpone their son's first-grade entrance to take him on a tour of the country.
The couple plans to spend a year traveling with savings and money from selling their house and car. The family has already set foot in 10 provinces across China and the journey is not over yet.
Yang Qiang said his son, nicknamed Mango, is a few days short of turning 6 in the fall of 2023. That is when he will be old enough to start first grade (in China, children start primary school when they turn 6).
So instead of sending their child to school, the couple decided to take their child to experience the country for about a year. They believe that this will help their child feel comfortable and positive in learning.
"Sometimes going slow is faster. If parents are good role models, their children will grow up to be good people," said Mr. Yang.

Instead of acquiring knowledge from books at school, Mr. Yang wants his children to learn through traveling and acquiring knowledge from the world.
"Traveling is a way of reading books without introductions. It helps you see and understand more. Thanks to that, each person's vision will be broader," the father said.
“I know what the sheep are doing. They are migrating, right?” Mango said to his father as the family drove past a field.
When the car stopped, the boy walked with the sheep in the meadow.
While the car visited historical sites and museums, Mr. Yang patiently told his children stories about culture and history. The trip is expected to end in a year, but Mr. Yang cannot give a specific time when they will return home because the family is still having fun and studying.
"The baby grew up in a lovely family. They have proven the ancient Chinese saying that traveling 10,000 miles is better than reading 10,000 books," commented a Weibo account.
