When re-established (in 1983), Tam Nong district faced many difficulties: there were almost no facilities, the agencies of the District Party Committee, the District People's Committee, departments, branches and organizations had to temporarily stay at schools to work, the infrastructure was still limited; the only road traffic was National Highway 30 running through the district; there were very few cultural and social works; the school system and medical stations were seriously degraded... At that time, the district's assets were 4.8 million VND, 50 tons of iron and 10 tons of nails...
Mr. Tran Thanh Nam - Chairman of Tam Nong District People's Committee said that from 1983 to now, through many generations of leaders with determination, effort and outstanding efforts, the district has always focused on promoting the spirit of "Self-reliance - autonomy - self-management" of the people, especially farmers, eliminating the mentality of waiting and relying on others. All Tam Nong people, whether local or from other places, are considered the main subject and an important driving force in the development process of the district. The district always promotes the spirit of dynamism, creativity, exploiting the potential and advantages of the locality; mobilizing and effectively using local resources and constantly attracting external investment, creating a lever to promote faster socio -economic development. At the same time, the district government always performs its duties well, creating a favorable environment for all people to develop together, not letting anyone be forgotten or left behind.
Along with the economy, the district focuses on cultural and social fields such as: fully and effectively implementing social security policies, policies for people with meritorious services and poverty reduction through training, vocational training, sending workers to work abroad for a limited period under contracts; guiding production models to create jobs, ensuring long-term attachment of people to the new land... In particular, the district builds the image of cadres, civil servants, and leaders in the apparatus who must truly accompany and serve partners, the business community and the people, a place where all people can enjoy the fruits of development, thereby helping people from many other localities feel secure and determined to choose to settle in this land to make a living.
Mr. Phan Hung Dung (born in 1973) - Head of the People's Committee of Hamlet K8, Phu Duc Commune, Tam Nong District, just took us to visit the hamlet, and shared that when the district was re-established, few people thought that 40 years later, the local socio-economic life would develop as dramatically as it has today. Previously, the population in the hamlet was sparse, but thanks to increasingly better living conditions, many people from other localities in and outside the province came here to settle. Currently, most households in the hamlet have 15 - 20 hectares of rice fields, some households own up to 150 hectares. In addition to agricultural development, many households in the hamlet invest in buying and selling, providing services... contributing to creating a lively and innovative rural picture.
Mr. Nguyen Van Do (born in 1950, formerly a Vietnamese-Cambodian, a 3/4-class disabled veteran, returned to K8 hamlet to start a business in 1976. He and his wife have 4 children (3 girls, 1 boy) who have stable jobs. Mr. Do confided: “Compared to before, the lives of people in K8 hamlet as well as people in the district have changed greatly in all aspects. My wife and I now have 5 hectares of rice fields, plus my monthly disabled veteran policy money, so our lives are stable. Although we are not as rich as many households in the hamlet, I feel very happy because I no longer have to worry about hunger and lack of everything like 30 or 40 years ago.”
With the support of the community, the efforts of families combined with the good implementation of poverty reduction and social security policies, the poverty rate of the district has been reduced annually, from 30.5% in 1986 to 2,892 poor households in 2015, accounting for 5.3%; currently there are 799 poor households, accounting for 2.82%; 642 near-poor households, accounting for 2.26%. The average GDP per capita of the district has increased annually, reaching 39 million VND in 2015 and currently estimated at 56.9 million VND.
