Speaking to reporters after the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Carney emphasized: "Canada will never, in any form, become part of the United States."
However, Canada's new leader also expressed hope that his government could find a way to "cooperate" with the Trump administration.
Earlier, Canada's new leader, Mark Carney, took a tough stance when he accused the US under President Donald Trump of trying to take over Canada, saying that this effort would have to be defeated.
After being chosen by the ruling Liberal Party to succeed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Mr. Carney said that Americans want resources and they want Canada.
He accused President Trump of attacking Canadian workers, families and businesses, but Ottawa would not let that happen.
Carney will take office at a time when Canadian sovereignty is facing an unprecedented threat from President Trump, who has repeatedly said he wants Canada to cease being an independent nation and become the 51st state of the United States. While initially dismissed as a joke, Canadian officials now say the threat is serious.
