Strengthen care and disease prevention for pets during the sunny season

Phu Yen is entering the peak of hot weather, which has a significant impact on the health of livestock and poultry. To limit the disadvantages caused by the weather, farmers need to proactively care for and protect their livestock properly.

Food Security

Prolonged hot weather with high temperatures has caused underground water sources in ponds, lakes, rivers and streams to dry up, many grasslands have dried up, and the natural food sources for livestock have decreased, affecting livestock farming of people in mountainous areas, especially in ethnic minority areas.

Son Hoa district has a large herd of more than 16,200 cows, concentrated in mountainous communes and ethnic minority areas. Ethnic minorities here still practice grazing, depending on natural grasslands and water from rivers and streams. Therefore, when the hot weather lasts for a long time, groundwater sources decrease, natural grasslands dry up, and cows are severely short of food.

Mr. Ksor Tun in Krong Pa commune said: Every day I have to drive the cows deep into the acacia fields to get grass to eat, but in the afternoon I have to feed them with straw stored at home. My family collected a lot of straw after the last rice crop, so we have a source of supplementary food for the cows. To help the cows avoid losing strength due to the sun, I take them out to eat earlier and come back later every day.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Song Hinh district, the district has about 16,300 cows. To help people change the free-range farming method, depending on natural grasslands, for many years, the locality has actively encouraged and guided ethnic minorities to convert mixed garden land to grow grass to raise cows.

Thanks to this, many people have gradually changed their habits and proactively provided food sources for livestock, especially during the hot season like now. Mi Thoan in Ea Trol commune said: Since receiving guidance and support from the government for grass seeds, my family has planted elephant grass all over the garden. This season, my family's cows have fresh grass to eat every day.

Improve animal health

Prolonged hot weather can easily reduce the resistance of livestock, and in some cases, it can also lead to disorders in the ability to regulate body temperature, circulation, respiration, and food digestion... This is one of the unfavorable factors affecting the growth rate of livestock. Therefore, to protect livestock during this period, in addition to providing enough food and water, farmers must proactively cool and reduce heat.

One of the ways to reduce heat that many farms are applying is to cool down livestock. Mr. Tran Thanh Duoc in Hoa Dinh Dong commune (Phu Hoa district) said: Since the beginning of the dry season, every day I have to spray water to bathe the pigs and wash the pens twice, helping to cool down the pens, reduce heat generation so that the pigs can eat and sleep more easily. At the same time, in the daily diet, I also add vitamin C and minerals, helping the pigs increase their resistance and reduce the risk of disease.

For large-scale chicken farms, most farmers install cooling fan systems, and the roofs are reinforced with materials to reduce heat. According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan in Phu Hoa town (Phu Hoa district), chickens can easily lose strength in hot weather if they are not well cared for. Therefore, Ms. Lan increases green food in the chickens' daily diet, and adds vitamins and minerals to the drinking water.

At the beginning of the dry season, she added a layer of coconut fiber carpet to the roof of the barn; when the weather is hot, she sprays water on the carpet to keep the roof moist and turns on the fan system to help cool the barn. “In hot weather, poultry often drink a lot of water, eat less, so they often lack nutrients, lose strength, and are susceptible to pathogens. Therefore, I have to take care of and monitor the health of the poultry to handle it promptly,” said Ms. Lan.

"The hot weather is forecast to continue, livestock farmers must proactively implement heat-resistant solutions appropriate to the actual situation and conditions of the farm and livestock," Nguyen Van Lam, Head of the Provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, recommended.
