Increase surprise inspections of slaughterhouses

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment requests localities to strengthen inspections and surprise checks of animal slaughterhouses; immediately rectify and strictly handle the slaughter of sick pigs, pigs that died from epidemics and were not controlled by veterinary staff according to regulations.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has just sent a document to provinces and cities on rectifying the management of slaughter activities, animal slaughter control procedures, ensuring disease safety and food safety.

The document clearly stated that recently, the media has continuously reported on the slaughter of sick pigs, dead pigs, pigs with infectious diseases (African Swine Fever, Blue Ear Disease, etc.) and selling them to processing and trading establishments for animal products (typically the seizure of a truck carrying 180 sick pigs and dead pigs for consumption on May 30 in Ha Tinh ; the discovery of a truck carrying many dead pigs to a slaughterhouse on June 3 in Quang Tri).

Authorities have just arrested a case of transporting 9 dead pigs to a slaughterhouse in Quang Tri .

In particular, on May 30, a post appeared on social media by account holder Jonny Lieu (with 29,000 followers) denouncing a number of serious violations by the leaders of CP Vietnam Livestock Joint Stock Company, which occurred at CP Fresh Shop My Xuyen, My Xuyen Town, My Xuyen District, Soc Trang Province.

Up to now, this case is being investigated and clarified by the Ministry of Public Security (according to the request of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment in Official Dispatch No. 2763/BNNMT-CNTY dated June 4 regarding the investigation and handling of information spread on social networks about the accusation of CP Joint Stock Company selling diseased pork).

To put an end to violations in slaughter management and control in localities, ensuring effectiveness and efficiency in ensuring food safety and preventing animal diseases, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment requests the Chairmen of the People's Committees of provinces and centrally-run cities to direct relevant departments, branches, and specialized veterinary agencies in localities to urgently and strictly implement the provisions of the veterinary law and the directives issued by the Politburo, the Secretariat, the National Assembly, the Government and the Prime Minister, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment on veterinary management, quarantine, and slaughter control to ensure food safety and disease safety.

At the same time, strengthen the inspection and surprise checks on veterinary and food safety at animal slaughterhouses; immediately rectify and strictly handle the slaughter of sick pigs, pigs that died of epidemics and were not controlled by veterinary staff according to local regulations; stop the operation of animal slaughterhouses that are not licensed to operate, do not ensure veterinary hygiene and food safety conditions, and use banned chemicals and additives in slaughtering.

Direct the Department of Agriculture and Environment to strictly implement the slaughter control process at slaughterhouses; develop and implement coordination regulations between the government and the Veterinary, Health, Police, Market Management forces... in the management of animal slaughter activities.

Organize propaganda and mobilize organizations and individuals involved in business, trading, slaughtering, preliminary processing and processing to raise awareness and responsibility in complying with and practicing good slaughtering, preliminary processing and processing procedures to ensure veterinary hygiene and food safety; at the same time, propagate to raise awareness of consumers, not to use animal products of unknown origin, not ensuring veterinary hygiene and food safety.

There are priority policies and implementation of the construction of a centralized slaughter network to ensure veterinary hygiene, disease safety, and food safety; at the same time, implementing a proactive food safety monitoring program for foods of animal origin.
