The National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology ( Ministry of Health ) has just issued Official Dispatch No. 603 to the Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control of provinces and cities regarding the strengthening of vaccination implementation and the need for additional Covid-19 AstraZeneca vaccine in April - June 2023.

The document stated that on February 8, 2023, the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology issued Decision No. 65 on the allocation of Covid-19 vaccines in the 186th batch.

Accordingly, 832,900 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine with an expiry date of July 9-11, 2023 will be allocated to 63 provinces/cities nationwide to deploy booster vaccination for people aged 18 and over.

According to a quick report from provinces/cities, up to now, the whole country has injected about 266 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine, of which 51.6 million people aged 18 and over have received a booster dose (3rd dose), reaching a rate of 81.0%.

However, this rate is not uniform across the country and many localities still have a rate below 80%. The number of AstraZeneca vaccines currently available at the routes (not including the 204,400 doses reserved at the national route) is about 300,000.

The rate of AstraZeneca vaccine use in the first 8 days of April 2023 was slow, with an average of about 1,040 doses/day, leading to a high risk of not using all the vaccines.

To increase coverage and effective use of the Covid-19 AstraZeneca vaccine, the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology requests that the Department of Health of provinces/cities report and advise the local Covid-19 Prevention and Control Steering Committee to direct relevant units to continue to strengthen the implementation of Covid-19 vaccination for target groups.

In particular, booster doses for people aged 18 and over in localities that have not reached the minimum target rate of 80%, effectively using the AstraZeneca vaccines allocated to the above-mentioned provinces/cities in the 186th phase.

The Department of Health of provinces/cities directs relevant units to review subjects receiving Covid-19 vaccination in the locality.

In case there is a need for additional AstraZeneca vaccines in April - June 2023, provinces/cities are requested to send documents to the Institutes of Hygiene and Epidemiology/Pasteur before April 17 for synthesis and timely provision of vaccines.

At the same time, the Institutes of Hygiene and Epidemiology/Pasteur provide professional support to localities and strengthen the management and coordination of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine among provinces under their management .
