Creating new momentum for Vietnamese sports

On the afternoon of December 21, 2023, the Conference on Orientation for High-Performance Sports Development to 2030 was held in Hanoi. At this Conference, many experts and managers "contributed" with many practical solutions to comprehensively re-evaluate the development of sports, especially high-performance sports. From there, solutions were proposed to mobilize resources, consider many perspectives to focus on implementing the Sports Development Strategy to 2030, with a vision to 2045 in a systematic and scientific manner to contribute to improving the achievements of domestic sports, focusing on high-performance sports in the international arena.

In a general report on the current status of sports achievements, athlete resources; orientation for developing high-performance sports from 2024-2030 and orientation for selecting key sports, Director of the Department of Physical Training and Sports Dang Ha Viet said that after many years of efforts, high-performance sports in Vietnam have made remarkable progress, affirming their position in the Southeast Asian region and initially approaching the sports level of the continent and the world. However, the development of high-performance sports in our country compared to other countries in the continent and the world is facing great challenges that require innovation in thinking and ways of doing high-performance sports.

The recent 2020 Olympics, 2018 and 2022 Asian Games have also shown that it is time for Vietnamese sports to continue to have a new perspective on how to invest in high-performance sports, and if we do not change the way we invest, it will be very difficult to aim for the Asian Games (ASIAD) and Olympics in the coming period.

The above situation shows that Vietnam's high-performance sports need to be adjusted to respond to changes in actual conditions, helping athletes improve their competitiveness at the Olympics and ASIAD.

Proposing solutions to realize the aspiration of bringing Vietnamese sports to the continental and world level, Prof. Dr. Lam Quang Thanh, former Deputy Director of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training, affirmed that to develop high-performance sports, we must innovate. This is a bridge for science and technology to directly serve the development of high-performance sports, especially the elite athletes, thereby creating a breakthrough in improving the quality, effectiveness of training and sports achievements. Sharing the same view with Prof. Dr. Lam Quang Thanh, People's Teacher - Prof. Dr. - Doctor Le Quy Phuong - Chairman of the Vietnam Sports Science Association, said that in-depth research on solutions to prevent injuries, health care, nutrition and recovery for high-performance athletes is also one of the particularly important issues and solutions contributing to the achievements of sports in general and high-performance sports in particular.

The key issue in improving the performance of Vietnamese Sports that experts have affirmed and mentioned the most is probably still resources and investment strategy. Reality shows that the level of investment in high-performance sports in our country compared to some countries in the region such as Thailand or Singapore is not equal, not to mention other countries in the continent. The problem of lack of money has made us struggle in a very narrow blanket. The goal is to reach the continental and world level but the actual capacity is only enough to invest at the regional level, including the lack of good management of allocated investment resources. In the current context, we do not only rely on state resources but also have to mobilize socialized resources, there needs to be a policy mechanism to encourage businesses to participate more strongly in sports activities, especially high-performance sports. In addition, we must manage allocated resources well. Only when investment resources are appropriate and properly managed can professional solutions be fully utilized and results be commensurate.

In addition, the "bottlenecks" in the current mechanisms and policies are also one of the reasons why Vietnam's high-performance sports have not really had the ability to "jump" as high and far as expected. The lives of coaches and athletes still have many difficulties. With the characteristics of their profession, coaches not only do the same work as teachers at school but also take on the role of fathers and mothers, taking care of meals, sleep, and sharing with athletes when they encounter difficulties in training and competition. Although they have been cared for, the regime and policies of coaches are not high, leading to them having to worry and struggle in life...

We know that for Vietnamese sports to reach regional and international levels, there are still many things to do, but looking at the history of Vietnamese sports in each sport and each period, although there are still many difficulties, there are sports that we are very proud of because they have affirmed their position and shined in the regional and world arenas. To turn the dreams and aspirations of Vietnamese sports into reality, as affirmed by the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung, in addition to paying attention to investing in the field of physical education and sports; innovating and improving the quality of training and coaching... the core issue is still the awareness, passion, love for the profession, love for the industry, and determination to overcome difficulties of athletes and coaches. If the sports industry knows how to arouse confidence and the desire to win not only in the team of coaches and athletes but also in the team of officials, civil servants, public employees and workers in the whole industry, Vietnamese sports will certainly have a different position and a different momentum to meet the expectations of the majority of people.
