Focus on implementing the Project of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice

Implementing the Project (PDP) Sustainable development of 1 million hectares of high-quality and low-emission rice cultivation associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030. Up to now, some pilot models implementing the PDP have been harvested, initially recording positive results.

Reduce costs, increase profits

Implementing the Project of Sustainable Development of 1 million hectares of high-quality and low-emission rice cultivation, Tan Hung district proactively deployed and implemented pilot models, farmers participating in the model reduced costs and increased profits on cultivated areas.

Mr. Le Van Ngay (Hung Thanh commune, Tan Hung district) said: “This is the third consecutive crop that he has participated in the pilot model of high-quality rice cultivation to reduce emissions. When participating in the model, farmers are trained in advanced farming techniques, applying sparse sowing, fertilizing, reducing the number of times pesticides are sprayed, etc., thereby reducing production costs.”

According to Mr. Ngan Van Phi - Director of Hung Tan Agricultural Cooperative, to pilot the high-quality rice cultivation model to reduce emissions, the province selected the cooperative to implement the model with an area of 15 hectares (4 farmer households participated). When participating in the model, farmers used 80kg/ha of seeds and 200kg/ha of fertilizer, applied the process of "1 must, 5 reductions", introduced mechanization into production, ... thereby achieving some positive results, especially reducing production costs and increasing profits.

In addition to the pilot model organized by the province, in the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring crop, Tan Hung district selected Vinh Buu Agricultural Cooperative to implement the pilot model with an area of 25 hectares, with 7 households participating. Up to now, households in the model have completed the harvest. According to the assessment of the district's professional sector, the rice yield in the model is 500 kg/ha higher than outside, production costs are 1.4 million VND/ha lower than outside the model, and profits are 4.9 million VND/ha higher than outside the model.

Participating in the pilot model, farmers reduce costs and increase profits.

In Tan Thanh district, the province chose Tan Binh Agricultural Service Cooperative as a pilot to implement a model of high-quality, low-emission rice cultivation on an area of 14 hectares with 7 households who are members of the cooperative participating. Participating in the model, farmers apply a border-effect seeding machine and fertilize with fertilizer. With this production method, farmers can both reduce the amount of seeds and ensure that no fertilizer is applied during the first 45 days of sowing.

Mr. Tran Van Lu, a member of Tan Binh Agricultural Service Cooperative, shared: “In the last crop, I reduced the amount of seeds, chemical fertilizers and irrigation water for my family’s 2 hectares of rice. At the end of the crop, my family’s rice yielded nearly 8 tons/ha, and the profit was more than 2 million VND/ha higher than outside the model.”

Focus on implementation

Participating in the project, the province registered to have 125,000 hectares of high-quality rice by 2030, deploying and implementing the project in 7 districts: Tan Hung, Vinh Hung, Moc Hoa, Tan Thanh, Thanh Hoa, Duc Hue, Thu Thua and Kien Tuong town in 2 phases.

In phase 1 from 2024-2025, the province will focus on consolidating existing areas of the Vietnam Sustainable Agriculture Transformation Project (VnSAT) in the province with an area of 60,000 hectares. In phase 2 from 2026-2030, the province will focus on identifying specific key areas to establish investment projects to develop new high-quality rice cultivation areas to reduce emissions outside the VnSAT project area and will expand by 65,000 hectares.

Initial implementation of the Project has recorded positive results.

According to the Director of the Agricultural Service Center of Tan Hung District - Tran Tan Tai, from the results of the pilot model of the 2024 - 2025 Winter-Spring crop, the district will continue to deploy more models. Specifically, in the 2025 Summer-Autumn crop, the district will deploy and implement 5 models with 125 hectares.

When participating in the model, farmers are supported with 40% of the costs including: organic microbial fertilizers, biological pesticides, land preparation and sowing machinery, straw treatment costs and smart field water level sensor applications equivalent to a support amount of nearly 100 million VND/model; at the same time, replicating the models in the planning area ensures that by 2030 the whole district will have 31,310 hectares of high-quality rice.

Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment - Dinh Thi Phuong Khanh said: "To implement the project, in the coming time, the province will continue to complete the plan contents, especially the components participating in the project such as infrastructure investment, reviewing the participating areas with investment roadmaps to ensure synchronous infrastructure from input materials to output products; continue to deploy pilot models for replication; train and transfer science and technology to people, especially in the stages of seed reduction, straw management, diary keeping, etc. ".

The project aims to form a specialized area for high-quality and low-emission rice cultivation associated with reorganizing the production system according to the value chain, applying sustainable farming processes. Thereby, reducing production costs, increasing value, sustainable development of the rice industry, improving production efficiency, business, income and life of rice growers, protecting the environment, adapting to climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions./.
