Vietnamese cinema names at Tokyo Film Festival 2023

In previous TIFF seasons, Vietnamese films appeared in familiar categories such as Asian Future, World Focus, Crosscut; or in 2022, Vietnamese films participated in the most important category, Competition, with the work Glorious Ashes by director Bui Thac Chuyen. At TIFF this year, there were no films from Vietnam participating, but this is the first year a Vietnamese film producer was selected as a member of the Jury, that is Tran Thi Bich Ngoc.

Appearing at the end of the red carpet program, producer Tran Thi Bich Ngoc and famous colleagues such as filmmaker, playwright, author, photographer Wim Wenders (Germany) - Chairman of the Jury, and actress and producer Trieu Dao (China), filmmaker Albert Serra (Spain), producer Kunizane Mizue (Japan), closed the opening program for this year's Tokyo Film Festival (TIFF) season with many interesting things that will take place until November 1.

Proud to be selected as a judge at TIFF 36, producer Tran Thi Bich Ngoc shared: "The Tokyo International Film Festival is a great festival for me to see new works of cinema. World cinema today has the ability to communicate in many ways that no other medium can. Being selected as a judge at TIFF, I feel that I have the responsibility to contribute to the development of cinema...".

In the press release sent out on the afternoon of October 23, mentioning the prominent figures who will be present at TIFF 36, the first name mentioned was director Zhang Yimou, followed immediately by director Tran Anh Hung.

Appearing at the opening ceremony, at the age of 73, the "ageless" director Zhang Yimou walked lightly on the red carpet. His work Full River Red participated in the Gala Selection category. Also at this event, he was awarded the lifetime achievement award for cinema.

The red carpet opening at film festivals is always shown to the maximum to serve the media, so there are many people who choose the red carpet to create scandals to polish their names, but not with TIFF. Since its formation in 1985, TIFF has always been respected by experts and audiences. This year, the red carpet is designed to be 165 m long (137 m in 2022), honoring 226 guests who are participants in film activities from all over the world.

At TIFF this year, the red carpet welcomed director Tran Anh Hung, his wife - actress Tran Nu Yen Khe, and actress Benoît Magimel, representing the film The Pot-au-Feu (participating in the Gala Selection category). Appearing in a black and white outfit and very fashionable , director Tran Anh Hung, a "familiar" of TIFF, walked alongside Tran Nu Yen Khe, waving to the audience and the press. At another prominent event within the framework of the Festival, TIFF Lounge - a program with the accompaniment of the Japan Foundation, director Tran Anh Hung will share about cinema with experts, the press and the audience on October 24.

It is clear that the post-Covid-19 impacts are still having a great impact on global economic and cultural activities, including cinema. If the previous festival seasons took place in the Roppongi Hills commercial and entertainment center, the scale, grandeur and grandeur of the festival could be clearly seen, then this year TIFF was organized more compactly, focusing more on cinema expertise. 219 films were selected compared to 174 films in 2022, of which Japan participated in 105 films, accounting for 48% compared to 55% of the previous festival season, is one of the specific proofs.

Another outstanding activity at TIFF 36 is the screening of 16 films by famous Japanese director Ozu Yasujiro (1903 - 1963) along with seminars and introductory films about the appeal of this filmmaker to the Japanese and world film industries.

TIFF 36 continues with many screenings, seminars, and exchanges with directors, actors, and producers... The closing ceremony and announcement of the winning films will take place on November 1.
