Through legal discovery, Google's antitrust trial with the Department of Justice has revealed a fascinating look at the future of ChatGPT.
Specifically, OpenAI's internal strategy, titled "ChatGPT: Strategy for the first half of 2025," describes the startup's aspiration to build an "AI super-assistant that deeply understands its users and is your interface to the Internet."
Super virtual assistant
The Verge cites documents that emphasize OpenAI wants to turn ChatGPT into a virtual super assistant.
"In the first half of next year, we'll start evolving ChatGPT into an assistant that understands what you care about and helps with every task a smart, trustworthy, emotionally intelligent person can do.
Models like o2 and o3 are finally smart enough to reliably perform representative tasks to enhance ChatGPT's actionability. Multimodal interaction solutions and generative user interfaces have also enabled both ChatGPT and users to express themselves in the best way for the task," the internal document reads.

The document goes on to describe a “super virtual assistant” as defined by OpenAI as “an intelligent entity with T-shaped skills” that enables broad application and specialized tasks.
More broadly, the new ChatGPT will be able to answer questions, find a home, contact a lawyer, sign up for a gym membership, plan a vacation, buy gifts, manage a calendar, track tasks, and even send emails. As an example of a more specialized task, the virtual assistant will even be able to write code.
Even reading through the cutaways, it’s clear to The Verge that OpenAI sees hardware as a necessary part of the future. The startup wants users to think of ChatGPT not just as a tool, but as a companion.
This also fits with OpenAI founder Sam Altman's recent view that young people are using ChatGPT as a "life advisor."
Despite its grand ambitions, the startup is also in a precarious position. Its current infrastructure cannot handle the growing volume of ChatGPT usage, which explains why Altman has focused on building data centers.
Part of the internal document also describes fierce competition in the AI chatbot world , with OpenAI admitting “we are leading but we can’t rest” and arguing that “growth and revenue don’t always go hand in hand.”
Relationship with Siri and Apple
One notable detail that OpenAI's internal document mentions is that ChatGPT will soon be integrated directly into the iPhone.
“Call ChatGPT an entity because it is personalized to you and available everywhere you go, including ChatGPT.com, native apps, your phone, email, or third-party interfaces like Siri,” the document reads.
If you've been following the development of ChatGPT, this is exactly what OpenAI has been doing in the first half of 2025. From implementing the multi-conversation memory feature to Operator, allowing ChatGPT to have the ability to represent users to directly manipulate across platforms and interfaces, all aimed at making this chatbot a super assistant in every aspect for users.
The biggest competitive threat to Apple, however, isn't just how the technology works, but where it works.
Specifically, OpenAI makes it clear that it wants to challenge the big guys, specifically naming “strong competitors who will leverage their distribution capabilities to their advantage.” ChatGPT has been Siri’s backup option for nearly a year now, but OpenAI clearly wants more.

“Choice really drives competition and benefits customers. Users should be able to choose their AI assistant. If you use iOS, Android, or Windows, you should be able to set ChatGPT as your default assistant.
“Apple, Google, Microsoft, Meta should not push their own AI without giving users fair alternatives. The same goes for search engines. Google, Apple, Microsoft should give users the right to choose their default search engine and make the underlying indexes accessible to AI assistants, including ChatGPT,” 9to5Mac quoted the document as saying.
To prove this ambition, OpenAI confidently asserts that it has all the elements needed to become a winner.
"One of the fastest growing products of all time, a category-defining brand, a leader in research, analytics, and a world-class research team. We don't rely on advertising, giving us flexibility in what to build.
Our culture values speed, bold moves, and pushing boundaries. Maintaining these advantages is hard work, but if done, they will last a long time," the company's documentation behind ChatGPT states.
