The Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA) has just been renamed the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA) after an extraordinary congress. The new executive board of the association consists of 21 members. Ms. Hoang Thi Lien, President of VPA, was elected President of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association.
According to Ms. Hoang Thi Lien, Vietnam is the world leader in pepper production and export. Vietnam is also number 1 in the world in cinnamon export and number 2 in the world in star anise export. Other spices also have quite high positions such as chili, cloves, ginger, turmeric, cardamom, nutmeg... But besides pepper, other spices such as cinnamon, star anise, cloves, chili, cloves, turmeric, ginger... are also developed separately.
This is a period marking a new turning point in the strategy for developing the production and export of Vietnamese spices. VPSA has a more complete position to represent the spice industry, attract investment and financial and technical support from many organizations, especially international organizations, contributing to improving product quality, developing brands, taking advantage of the benefits of international integration to promote bringing Vietnamese spice products to the world market and positioning the Vietnamese spice brand in the global spice supply chain.
In addition to about 400 operating businesses, this industry has a total area of spice crops at 500,000 hectares with hundreds of thousands of small-scale farming households participating.

Spices have become an indispensable ingredient in the meals of people in many countries around the world, especially Muslim countries (accounting for 1/4 of the world's population). Vietnam has been one of the largest spice producers and exporters in the world in recent years. There is still a lot of room for the development of the Vietnamese spice industry in the next 10 years, if the spice industry has a unified voice and an industry association to play an effective leading role.
However, according to the assessment of ministries and sectors, Vietnam's spice plants have only exploited about 40%-50% of their potential. If they receive attention, support to better connect with the market and orient production and planning of the industry, meeting market demand, the export turnover of pepper and spices can reach 2-3 billion USD/year.
According to VPSA, it is expected that the total export turnover of Vietnamese spices by 2025 could reach about 2 billion USD with an export volume of about 500,000 tons.
In the first two months of 2023, Vietnam's pepper exports reached 41,000 tons, worth 129 million USD, up 35% in volume but down 7.4% in value compared to the same period last year. However, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development forecasts that the global pepper market is showing signs of recovery, so pepper exporters need to stabilize raw material areas.
During the same period, Vietnam exported 12,000 tons of cinnamon, worth 35 million USD, up 48.7% in volume and 13.8% in value over the same period in 2022. India, the United States and Bangladesh are the 3 main export markets of Vietnamese cinnamon.
