Ho Chi Minh City: Verifying natural forests cut down in Con Dao

On October 8, the People's Committee of Con Dao Special Zone (Ho Chi Minh City) issued Document No. 1246/UBND-KT to the Management Board of Con Dao National Park and Con Dao Forest Ranger Department requesting to inspect and verify the current status of natural forest areas that were cut down or exploited according to information announced by Con Dao National Park.

The People's Committee of Con Dao Special Zone requested the Con Dao Forest Protection Department to preside over and coordinate with the Con Dao National Park Management Board, the Economic Department and relevant agencies to conduct field inspections in two areas: At the foot of Thanh Gia Mountain - Area 3 (the intersection of D5 and Huynh Thuc Khang streets) and the Bung Beo area - Area 1.

Units must clarify the current status of forests, their origin, deforestation status, determine the causes, subjects and responsibilities for forest management and protection, and propose measures to remedy and restore the current status if there are violations.

The People's Committee of Con Dao Special Zone also requested the Management Board of Con Dao National Park to provide the legal basis for determining the current status as natural forest and records and documents related to forest management and protection in the deforested areas such as: Boundary records, forest management maps, forest patrol records, periodic reports, etc.; coordinate in providing information, creating conditions for the Con Dao Forest Protection Department to inspect and verify. The Economic Department was assigned to monitor, synthesize results and advise the People's Committee of the Special Zone on handling measures according to regulations.

Previously, the Con Dao National Park Management Board sent document No. 107/VQG-HTQT dated October 3 to the People's Committee of Con Dao Special Zone, sharing information that through patrolling and protecting the assigned forest area, it was discovered that some of the above areas (adjacent to Con Dao National Park) had natural forests being cut down or exploited.
