Children in Thai Binh city come for free screening at Thai Binh Children's Hospital.
Early in the morning, Ms. Nguyen Thi Nu, Quang Trung Ward (Thai Binh City) took her grandchild to Thai Binh Children's Hospital for examination. She said: The family's circumstances are difficult, her parents separated, she has lived with me since she was 2 years old. Since childhood, she had a brain defect, could not walk steadily, and could not communicate as quickly as her peers. Although she is now 16 years old, walking is still difficult, greatly affecting her life. When she came to the hospital for examination, the doctors diagnosed her with a contracted right Achilles tendon and prescribed free surgery in July to make walking easier. Our family is very happy and excited. I would like to thank the organizers, doctors, and sponsors of the program.
The program to identify and screen children with disabilities has been organized since April 14 in districts and cities. Each child who comes for examination is supported with 100,000 VND. As of April 17, 1,150 children with disabilities aged 0-16 in the province have been screened for free, of which more than 240 children were indicated for surgery, 135 children were indicated for consultation and 23 children were indicated for assistive devices. Doctor Dang Huy Hoang, Deputy Head of the Department of Diagnostic Imaging, Thai Binh Children's Hospital said: When children come for examination, they will be classified according to specialties such as ENT, surgery, orthopedic trauma, rehabilitation... combined with ultrasound to comprehensively assess the type of disability. Thereby, cases indicated for surgery will be supported free of charge. Under the direction of the Department of Health , the hospital leaders, officers and staff of departments and offices have proactively provided medical supplies and equipment... in coordination with other units to ensure the program is implemented most effectively.
With the goal of creating opportunities for children in particularly difficult circumstances in the province to access free medical services; timely support for children who are unfortunately sick or disabled to have the opportunity to have surgery, helping children receive health care, study and develop, the work of screening and making a list of disabled children has been quickly deployed by medical units. Mr. Nguyen Trong Dai, Deputy Director of Center II - Vietnam Association for the Relief of Disabled Children, said: Children who are indicated for surgery have disabilities such as eye defects (strabismus, ptosis, cataracts), dental and facial defects (cleft lip, cleft palate...), ear, nose and throat defects, urinary defects (inguinal hernia, hypospadias, megacolon...), defects due to burns and benign tumors. Initially, we expected about 100 children to be indicated for surgery. However, after examination, this number has increased. The surgery will be performed in July at Thai Binh Children's Hospital with the participation of doctors and specialists from the central level. In severe cases, the patient will be transferred to a higher level. All cases will be supported with full surgical costs.
Children with disabilities not only need care but also need opportunities to affirm their own values. Therefore, screening, examination and free surgical support activities have practical significance, demonstrating the community's concern and cooperation, opening up opportunities and lighting up hope for children with disabilities so that they can be more confident on their journey to the future.
