Prisoner Doan Quoc Huy, Captain of Sewing Team No. 19, Sub-camp 1, Nghia An Prison, shared: “Before being arrested, I did not think that I would be able to sew as skillfully as I am now. Because, when I was in society, I followed my friends' trends, was lazy, did not have mature thinking, and did not know how to appreciate the value of labor.

But since serving my prison sentence at Nghia An Prison, I have been cared for, educated , helped, encouraged, and provided a favorable environment by the Board of Supervisors, the Council of Officers, and especially the prison officers in charge, so that I can study, reform, make progress, recognize my mistakes, and especially receive career guidance, teaching, and vocational training to help me appreciate the value of work more, actively learn and improve my skills, so that I have now learned to sew proficiently.

Other prisoners, when serving their prison sentences, are also instructed and taught various professions such as: animal husbandry, farming, sewing, knitting, making fake eyelashes, wigs, sewing leather shoes, stone carving, wood carving, etc., lighting up the hope of having a skilled profession to rebuild their lives.

My plan after completing my prison sentence is to use the knowledge and sewing skills I learned in prison to find work in industrial garment factories and companies. After saving some capital, I will open my own garment factory to support myself and my family and stabilize my life.

Captain Nguyen Quyet Thang, a prison officer of Division 3, Nghia An Prison, said: “With the leadership and direction of the Party Committee and the Command Board of the unit, which is to use love and responsibility to transform and educate prisoners to become good citizens, useful to society, in addition to educating and reforming prisoners, I also try my best to research, explore, and learn knowledge and skills in the garment industry to organize guidance and vocational training for prisoners in the team I manage.

Through career guidance and training, most of the prisoners are enthusiastic about working, actively helping each other in studying to improve their skills. Up to now, the prisoners in my team have mastered the skills and techniques of garment processing. The sincere feelings of the staff and the enthusiasm and positivity in work have partly helped the prisoners to reduce their longing for their relatives and family, as well as gradually erase the guilt of their mistakes, thereby turning to goodness and wishing to soon return to normal life and start a new life.

According to the provisions of the law on the execution of criminal sentences, organizing labor for prisoners is both a right and an obligation, and a mandatory requirement during the time of serving a prison sentence. The main purpose is to educate and reform prisoners through labor, vocational training, gradually train their behavior and personality, and at the same time produce material wealth for prisoners, creating conditions for prisoners to reintegrate into the community after the end of their prison sentence.

Based on the labor, production, and vocational training plans approved annually by Department C10 and based on climate, land, and human resource conditions, the Party Committee and leaders of Nghia An Prison direct the concretization of the work plan for organizing labor, career guidance, and vocational training for prisoners.

In particular, focus on human resources to take care of, weed, and exploit rubber latex; develop green vegetable areas and plant, diversify vegetables, tubers, and fruits; develop, care for livestock, poultry, and raise freshwater fish to provide on-site green vegetables and food for officers, soldiers, and prisoners. Organize planting of some types of trees to green bare land and hills. Joint ventures and associations with partners to organize the processing of some handicrafts such as: making fake eyelashes, wigs, sewing, stainless steel, construction, weaving plastic tables and chairs, sewing shoes, carpentry and stone art...

Up to now, Nghia An Prison has organized labor and vocational training for prisoners, proactively formed joint ventures and partnerships with businesses to create stable jobs for over 75% of prisoners working in the factory. Effectively managed and used land area, promoted strengths, potentials, soil, converted crop and livestock structures to suit reality, served labor, vocational training and created additional income, contributing to improving the material and spiritual life of officers, soldiers and prisoners.

With the profession learned in prison, many prisoners after completing their prison sentences and returning to normal life have had the opportunity to find jobs, build stable lives, and reduce the rate of recidivism.
