'The Eras Tour' sparks debate about movie culture

Crazy love for their idol isn't the only emotion Taylor Swift fans are feeling, after her musical film hit theaters in North America over the weekend.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour - the highest-grossing musical film of all time in the US - has sparked a social media debate around moviegoing culture.

Among the viral posts on the subject was a video shared to X (formerly Twitter) showing Taylor Swift performing the song Marjorie while theatergoers sang along, shining their phone flashlights from their seats and dancing.

Another viewer posted on X, sharing that they had difficulty hearing Taylor Swift sing during the screening: "I'm watching the worst movie ever, can't even hear Taylor's voice", and said: "Some people are so disrespectful. Some people should be kicked out of the theater for being so rude. They completely ruined everyone else's enjoyment".

Some comments posted on social media expressed that most of the audience expected an experience similar to watching a live concert. "But the experience in the theater was terrible. Many people wanted to dance, stand on chairs, scream...", the poster described.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour hit theaters on October 13, grossing $123.5 million worldwide in its opening weekend.

Additionally, there have been numerous social media posts noting that audiences — especially those who can't afford expensive tickets to see a live concert — should be encouraged to watch the film as an interactive experience.

In a previous statement on its movie guide, distributor AMC Theaters said: "We encourage dancing and singing during this musical event, but please do not dance in your seats or block the view of other audience members."

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour , released by AMC Theaters on October 13, grossed $92.8 million from 3,850 theaters in North America and a global total of $123.5 million over the past three days. The film marked the second-biggest October opening weekend of all time, behind the 2019 blockbuster Joker .
