"Congratulations to Nguyen Van Vi for being included in the Southeast Asian All-Stars squad to play against Manchester United in Malaysia on May 28," Nam Dinh Club's homepage announced on the morning of May 8.

The Vietnamese defender is the fifth player on the ASEAN All-Stars team's roster, after Nguyen Quang Hai, Nguyen Hai Long, Bui Hoang Viet Anh and Do Duy Manh.

Van Vi is a mainstay in the Vietnam national team and has been highly regarded by coach Kim Sang-sik since taking over. His goal against Cambodia in a friendly match on March 19, along with two goals against Laos on the evening of March 25 in the Asian Cup qualifiers, helped Van Vi become the full-back who scored the most goals for the Vietnam national team under coach Kim Sang-sik (4 goals).

Under coach Park Hang-seo, Van Vi was called up and played in the 2-0 win over Afghanistan in June 2022. However, he was not used again. Under coach Philippe Troussier, the defender of Nam Dinh Club was also absent from major tournaments.

At the ASEAN Cup 2024, Van Vi was continuously given the opportunity to compete and make his mark thanks to his impressive ability to attack and defend.

This year, the team will welcome a new overseas Vietnamese face, Cao Quang Vinh (Jason Pendant). The competition between Van Vi and Quang Vinh on the left wing is worth waiting for.

The friendly match between ASEAN All-Stars and Manchester United is a charity fundraising activity, and also aims to honor outstanding players of Southeast Asian football.
