High School Graduation Exam 2025: Good and difficult English questions, predicted to score 5, 6 points

According to experts, the English exam for the 2025 high school graduation exam will have strong changes and high differentiation compared to the old program, with fewer 9 and 10 points than last year.

PhD student, Master Nguyen Minh Tri, Director of the English Language Program at Hoa Sen University, commented that this is the first year of implementing the exam according to the new general education program. "This requires candidates to study hard, carefully with high practical ability, limit the situation of learning by rote, with the type of questions that fill in the blanks appropriate to the paragraph. Candidates need to grasp critical thinking and clearly understand the context of the text to be able to choose the most suitable sentence for the blank rather than just learning by rote, tips for choosing answers", said Master Minh Tri.

According to Mr. Tri, a familiar type of exercise for students is choosing the appropriate word to fill in the paragraph. However, this type of exercise integrates both grammatical and vocabulary choices. In addition, the reading comprehension passage has also reduced the number of questions that are too easy for candidates. However, there are questions that require candidates to understand the meaning of the word to choose the appropriate sentence. This requires candidates to have high critical thinking and grasp the content and meaning of the text.

"The reading comprehension passages in the lesson and in the exam are taken from real sources to enhance the applicability and practicality of the exam, closer to real-life usage. Sources taken from newspapers help students understand the articles from their real-life contexts," said Mr. Tri.

In addition, Master Minh Tri believes that the strongest and brightest point in the exam according to the 2018 General Education Program is the type of question that arranges the order of communication sentences. This type of question requires candidates to understand each role in the dialogue to be able to arrange the order of the dialogue appropriately.

"In general, the test is good and has a high level of differentiation, limiting rote learning and stereotyping in terms of grammar and vocabulary compared to before. Students need to have good foreign language skills and be able to apply them to real-life applications in order to be able to do the test. With the difficulty level of this year's English test, only very good candidates can get 9 or 10 points, and the average score is around 5 or 6 points," Master Tri predicted.
