Dragon fruit export market is still positive

Currently, the country is entering the peak harvest season for fruits, causing some types to drop in price. Particularly in Binh Thuan, in addition to mango and jackfruit products with low prices, in the past week, the price of dragon fruit at the end of the off-season and the beginning of the season has dropped at the garden by 5,000 - 8,000 VND/kg of red and white dragon fruit depending on the type. Notably, the field of exporting dragon fruit officially under GAP standards has shown positive signs since the beginning of the year, with stable prices.

For example, the 5-hectare dragon fruit farm of Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh, Ham Duc commune, Ham Thuan Bac district, has been cultivating according to GlobalGAP standards since 2023. Each month, the garden regularly harvests nearly 20 tons for export to demanding markets with a stable selling price of 24,000 - 26,000 VND/kg, with a company in Ho Chi Minh City signing a purchase contract. This is a dragon fruit farm that has met strict inspection requirements with more than 900 active ingredients required by importers, and is favored by the import market because it ensures safety. With GAP production methods, there are currently a number of other dragon fruit cooperatives in the province with good export orders in the first months of 2025.

Or as shared by Mr. Nguyen Anh Mai - a member of Thuan Quy Dragon Fruit Cooperative, Ham Thuan Nam District: "Currently, the Cooperative is mainly supplying dragon fruit to the European market. One of the advantages of Binh Thuan dragon fruit is that the weather is favorable for off-season lighting, achieving output, while some other countries have shortages of goods".

In the first months of 2025, dragon fruit is one of the traditional fruits of Vietnam, reaching a turnover of 155 million USD. Of which, Binh Thuan dragon fruit accounts for more than 70% of the country's dragon fruit output and export turnover. This is the result achieved thanks to the recent promotion of domestic and foreign trade activities by the provincial authorities as well as the Dragon Fruit Association. Thereby, further tightening the connection to maintain traditional markets and seek new potential markets to connect and expand exports. At the same time, calling on and mobilizing dragon fruit growers, cooperatives, and enterprises to focus on improving the quality of agricultural products, building growing area codes, and export packaging facility codes according to standards and regulations from importers. Therefore, in the first months of 2025, the output and export turnover of Binh Thuan dragon fruit increased by 30% over the same period last year, in which the market share of Europe, Japan, Korea, Australia, and New Zealand imports tended to increase.

Mr. Huynh Canh - Chairman of Binh Thuan Dragon Fruit Association said that the province's dragon fruit has been exported to more than 20 countries and territories around the world , including the US market. In the near future, the US will apply a 46% tax rate on Vietnamese agricultural and aquatic products. This will be disadvantageous for dragon fruit exported to this market. However, Binh Thuan Dragon Fruit Association said that the impact is not much, because for a long time, only about 1% of dragon fruit output has been exported to this market due to high logistics costs. Along with that, domestic export companies have begun to shift to finding partners from other importing countries to replace them.

Faced with the unpredictable developments of the agricultural market, dragon fruit farmers in the province are still actively taking care of their dragon fruit to ensure quality and productivity. The purpose is to meet the increasingly stringent requirements of the market to maintain the brand and gain a foothold in official import markets as well as unofficial markets through the Chinese market.
