The person mentioned is the Hero of the People's Armed Forces, Intelligence Major Nguyen Van Thuong.
Major Nguyen Van Thuong (1938-2018) in Loc Hung commune, Trang Bang district, Tay Ninh province, in a revolutionary family. At the age of 3 months, he was sent to his aunt to raise so that his parents could join the revolution. When he was 8 years old, he received news that his mother was arrested, exiled to Con Dao and then sacrificed. In 1959, his father sacrificed during a military intelligence operation.
In May 1959, Nguyen Van Thuong decided to join the revolution. Three years later, he was chosen to be a bodyguard for comrade Sau Dan (comrade Vo Van Kiet, then Secretary of the Saigon-Gia Dinh City Party Committee).

When the national liberation resistance entered a fierce phase, the Party Central Committee decided to establish the Southern Intelligence Department. Nguyen Van Thuong was trusted and selected to work in intelligence, under the direct management and training of comrade Muoi Nho (Colonel Nguyen Nho Quy, Head of the Saigon - Cho Lon Intelligence Department).
In the role of bread seller Tu Hieu, he worked as an intelligence officer in the Southeast region, from Tay Ninh to Binh Long ( Binh Phuoc ), Long Khanh (Dong Nai) and Saigon. He participated in the traffic points of intelligence clusters A18, A20, A22 and A36.
The main task was to transfer information from spies that we planted deep in the Saigon government of Mr. Ba Quoc (Major General, Hero of the People's Armed Forces Dang Tran Duc), Hai Nha (Major General Vu Ngoc Nha), Hai Trung (Major General, Hero of the People's Armed Forces Pham Xuan An)... to the Central Office for Southern Vietnam.
During his time in service, he transferred 900 pieces of intelligence to the safe war zone, thereby helping the Politburo and the Party Central Committee have timely strategies and policies to fight the enemy.
In February 1969, while on his way to bring documents from Saigon to the base area, Nguyen Van Thuong was discovered by an American aircraft, which lowered it to capture him. He took the initiative to use an AK gun to shoot down the helicopter, killing three Americans. The US military had to mobilize a large force of 72 helicopters, each one a squad, the entire 48th Regiment and the 5th Division of the Republic of Vietnam to capture him.
When fighting until the last bullet, he was captured but managed to hide the documents. The enemy was determined to exploit him in every way, including using money, beautiful women, and positions. Unable to subdue Nguyen Van Thuong, the enemy ordered his legs to be amputated six times, causing both legs of the intelligence officer to be amputated almost to the groin.
Nguyen Van Thuong's courage and loyalty made even the American officers respect him. The American lieutenant colonel who directly ordered his torture was also there, looked at him for a while without saying anything, then turned to the table and sat down to write. After writing for a while, he stood up and walked back and forth, then approached him, looked at his half-remaining body for a long time, and said softly: "You are truly a creature of steel, testing each other's strength for the past 7 months, we lost to you."
In February 1973, when the enemy returned prisoners of war, Nguyen Van Thuong was sent to the North for convalescence, and was later awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces.
