Breathing through the nose “makes you more beautiful”

Studies show that breathing through your nose can improve your physical and mental health, including lowering blood pressure, reducing stress, boosting brain function and immunity, and reducing snoring. In fact, closing your mouth while breathing can even make you more attractive.

According to Danish longevity scientist and biomechanics expert Mads Tömörkènyi, in addition to eating and talking, the mouth is designed to breathe when the nasal passages are blocked by colds or allergies. Regular mouth breathing overstimulates certain muscles in the cheek area, causing the airway to constrict, shrinking the size of the lower jaw (the largest bone in the face) and affecting the structure of the teeth. The founder of fitness brand MT Performance said that breathing through the nose can change the structure of the muscles and tissues in the face, preventing crooked teeth and making the face slimmer, the eyes become "dreamy", and even change the shape of the nose, making you more beautiful.

Dr. Richard Marques, a British dentist, explains that the result of jawbone shrinkage is that the teeth become compressed, leading to misalignment and loosening. According to him, excessive mouth breathing is “harmful to overall oral health,” including causing dry mouth and leading to bad breath, inflamed gums and an increased risk of periodontal disease. Mouth breathing can also cause tooth decay and tooth sensitivity due to increased acidity in the mouth. On the contrary, “practicing the habit of breathing through the nose will support the muscles in the face and thereby support the jawbone and form straight teeth,” Dr. Marques emphasizes.

Practice nasal breathing technique

Experts say signs that you are a mouth breather include a dry tongue, waking up in the morning with a dry mouth and difficulty breathing comfortably through your nose. Gillian McMichael, a meditation instructor from Edinburgh, UK, suggests that if you notice yourself breathing through your mouth at rest, you should correct it. The method is called alternate nostril breathing, in which you close one nostril while inhaling and exhaling through the other. This is a technique practiced in yoga to increase energy. “One of the best things you can do to improve your breathing is to learn meditation and yoga,” he recommends.

Mark Hallam, a personal trainer in Melbourne, Australia, says walking is a great way to practice: Take five to 10 steps while breathing in through your nose, hold your breath for five to 10 steps, then breathe out for five to 10 steps. As you get better at breathing through your nose, those numbers can increase.
