The gas is extracted from the Sakarya field off the Black Sea, at a depth of more than 2,000m, transported through a 170km long underwater pipeline and through many gas compressor stations to the Filyos facility, which has just been built on land in Zonguldak province, northern Türkiye.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony of the Black Sea natural gas facility in Zonguldak province, President Erdogan affirmed that this is a “historic milestone towards energy independence”.
“We will provide free natural gas to households in quantities of up to 25 cubic meters per month for one year,” President Erdogan said.
"With great efforts, natural gas discovered just three years ago has been put into use," Erdogan said. According to Erdogan, the gas field will meet about 30% of Türkiye's gas needs when operating at full capacity.
According to the Turkish President's Office, in the first phase, the Sakarya field will produce 10 million cubic meters of natural gas per day and will increase to 40 million cubic meters per day by 2028 in the second phase. The first phase's capacity meets about 6% of Turkey's annual gas consumption, thereby contributing to the country's economic growth.
Türkiye's offshore gas reserves in the Black Sea are estimated at 710 billion cubic meters, enough to meet domestic gas demand for 35 years, said Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Fatih Donmez.
Türkiye, a country heavily dependent on oil and gas imports from Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran, as well as natural gas imports from Qatar, the United States, Nigeria and Algeria.
According to data from Turkey's energy regulator EPDK, domestic natural gas production is mainly in the Thrace region. However, production only accounts for about 1% of Türkiye's total consumption of 60 billion cubic meters in 2021.
With its geographical advantage, Türkiye has long been a transit hub for major gas pipelines. The presence of gas exploitation and transportation facilities on the Black Sea creates favorable conditions for Türkiye to re-export this fuel to European countries./.
