The civil war in Syria is becoming increasingly tense as rebels take control of the strategic city of Hama, while the capital Damascus is attacked by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

On December 5, according to witnesses, gunfire and artillery fire were heard in the Syrian capital Damascus, especially in the western Mazzeh neighborhood.
Syrian state television reported that Syrian air defenses intercepted several and shot down two UAVs over Damascus. However, the number of casualties and damage has not yet been calculated.
Hours earlier, rebel forces captured the strategic city of Hama from pro-government forces, forcing the Syrian army to withdraw from the city for the first time since the war broke out in 2011.
Speaking on Telegram, Syrian rebel leader Abu Mohammed al-Jolani said his fighters had entered Hama “to heal the wounds that have existed in Syria for 40 years” and would “not seek revenge”.
Meanwhile, on the same day, Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem declared that the armed movement will stand side by side with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, doing everything possible to prevent the rebels who want to “destroy this country once again... to overthrow the regime” and “cause chaos”.
Also on December 5, United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged “all those with influence to do their part for the (Syrian) people who are enduring prolonged suffering,” and declared that all parties have an obligation to protect civilians.
He said there was an urgent need for immediate humanitarian access to all civilians in need in Syria and a return to the UN-sponsored political process to end the bloodshed in the Middle Eastern country.
According to the UN Secretary-General, the escalation of the conflict in Syria is the result of “chronic collective failure” in the diplomatic field and now, after 14 years of conflict, it is time for all parties to seriously cooperate “to come up with a new, inclusive and comprehensive approach to resolve this crisis in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2254”.
Resolution 2254 was adopted by the UN Security Council in 2015 to establish a roadmap for a political transition in Syria.
