Secretary recounts Queen Elizabeth's final moments

VnExpressVnExpress13/01/2024

Queen Elizabeth's secretary said that many people were with the Queen before she passed away and she passed away peacefully.

"The Queen passed away peacefully in her sleep. She seemed to be unconscious and in no pain," Edward Young, the late Queen Elizabeth II's private secretary and most senior staff member, recounted her final moments in a memoir published on January 12.

Secretary Young said that when the Queen was about to die, many people came to visit her, including Princess Anne and her close aide Angela Kelly, who took turns staying by her side. Reverend Kenneth MacKenzie also visited and read the Bible to pray for the Queen.

After the Queen left, a royal staff member brought in a red box that had been found on her bed. The box contained two sealed letters, one addressed to her son Charles and one to her secretary Young.

The box also contains a list of candidates selected by Queen Elizabeth to be awarded medals of merit for exceptional contributions across the Commonwealth.

The Queen's biographer Robert Hardman wrote that even on her deathbed she completed her work.

The Queen's passing was so sudden that Charles is said to have travelled by helicopter to Balmoral Castle and read "Operation London Bridge", the Queen's funeral plan, during the journey.

Biographer Hardman said that Charles thought he had days to spend with his mother, rather than hours, and then called his sons William and Harry to Scotland as soon as possible.

Buckingham Palace announced on September 8, 2022 that Queen Elizabeth passed away peacefully at Balmoral Castle, at the age of 96. She was the longest-reigning monarch in British history, having appointed 15 prime ministers .
