NHK reported on May 29 that Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has just announced that his eldest son Kishida Shotaro (32 years old) will quit his job as his personal secretary, due to holding a party at his official residence last year.

Speaking to reporters, Prime Minister Kishida said his son will resign from June 1 and be replaced by secretary Yamamoto Takayoshi, who held the position until October 2022.

The son was given a stern warning after being criticised for hosting a party at the prime minister’s residence. Last week, a magazine reported that Shotaro had held a year-end party with relatives in December 2022.

Attendees took photos in a room typically used to receive foreign dignitaries. They also held a mock press conference there.

Prime Minister Kishida explained that his son's behavior at the prime minister's residence was inappropriate, adding that Shotaro was also a public figure as his secretary.

The leader added that he made the announcement after completing most of the coordination related to the G7 summit, which will take place from May 19-21 in Japan.

He said he took the matter seriously because he was responsible for appointing his son to the secretary position. "Of course, the responsibility for the appointment lies with me. I want to fulfill my duty by looking at the challenges that cannot be delayed and moving forward resolutely," Kyodo news agency quoted him as saying.

Opposition parties had previously called on Mr Kishida to fire his son, saying the prime minister should not appoint his son and that Shotaro was not up to the job.
