At the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his wife, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his wife, along with a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation, will pay an official visit to Malaysia and attend the 46th ASEAN Summit and related Summits in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from May 24-28.

Vietnam and Malaysia officially established diplomatic relations on March 30, 1973; upgraded to Strategic Partnership during Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung's official visit to Malaysia (August 7-8, 2015) and most recently upgraded to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during General Secretary To Lam's official visit (November 21-23, 2024).

Malaysia is Vietnam's second largest trading partner in ASEAN (after Thailand) and 11th in the world. Meanwhile, Vietnam is Malaysia's third largest trading partner in ASEAN.

In 2024, bilateral trade turnover between the two countries reached more than 14.2 billion USD, an increase of more than 12% compared to 2023 (Vietnam exported nearly 5.1 billion USD and imported more than 9.1 billion USD).

Malaysia is also the second largest investor in ASEAN in Vietnam (after Singapore), ranking 11th out of 143 countries and territories investing in Vietnam, with 731 valid projects, total registered capital of 13 billion USD (mainly in the fields of education and training, production, distribution of electricity, gas, water, processing and manufacturing industries).

The multifaceted cooperation between Vietnam and Malaysia has developed well over the past 50 years. In 2023, the two countries celebrated the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

On May 26-27, the 46th ASEAN Summit and related Summits will take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, bringing together senior leaders of the 10 ASEAN member states, Timor-Leste, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and China.

With the theme “Inclusive and Sustainable”, these Conferences are of great significance, providing an opportunity for leaders to discuss, evaluate and identify strategic directions to enhance cooperation, maintain momentum in building the ASEAN Community, and at the same time enhance the capacity to respond, adapt and coordinate actions in the face of new challenges.

The ASEAN-GCC-China Economic Summit will take place during the 46th ASEAN Summit on 26-27 May in Malaysia, along with the 2nd ASEAN-GCC Summit. This is the first summit between ASEAN, the GCC and China at the initiative of the Malaysian Chair.

The leaders are expected to discuss measures to promote economic cooperation between the three sides, focusing on areas such as trade, investment, supply chain connectivity; energy and sustainable development; digital transformation and innovation; agriculture and food security; tourism, education and cultural exchange.

The conference is expected to adopt the Joint Statement of the ASEAN-GCC-China Economic Summit to affirm the commitment to cooperation among the three parties.
