After the Philippine women's team (the reigning champions of Southeast Asia) unexpectedly suffered a shocking defeat against Myanmar yesterday (May 3), it was the turn of the country's men's team to suffer a humiliating defeat against a much weaker opponent, Timor Leste, on the evening of May 4.
After the previous two matches in Group A, U22 Philippines lost 0-3 to Indonesia and had a lucky draw against host Cambodia. In this third match, U22 Philippines hopes to win all 3 points when facing U22 Timor Leste to keep their hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive.

However, after only 15 minutes of play, the net of goalkeeper Quincy Kammeraad of U22 Philippines shook. Receiving a pass from Cristevao, Mouzinho broke through and delicately chipped the ball past goalkeeper Quincy Kammeraad to quickly open the score for U22 Timor Leste.
The difficulties for U22 Philippines became even more complicated when in the 27th minute, Dennis Chung received a second yellow card, which turned into a red card, and had to leave the field after a rough tackle on Joao from Timor Leste.
Playing with one less player left U22 Philippines stuck in their attack plans, and had to constantly defend against quick counterattacks from the opponent.
At the end of the first half, it was fortunate that goalkeeper Kammeraad did not have to pick the ball out of the net a second time. That was the situation when Zenivio shot from the left wing, Kammeraad used his foot to block the ball, Olaga rushed in to kick the rebound but the ball unfortunately hit the crossbar and went out.
In the second half, the game did not change much when U22 Philippines could not raise their formation to attack to find an equalizer. In the 49th minute, Mouzinho had a good chance to score the second goal after a pass from his teammate but this player could not beat Kammeraad.
However, just 6 minutes later, the U22 Philippines net shook after a beautiful combination from the Timor Leste players. Captain Oliveira made a favorable pass for Riberio, who was not offside, to get the ball and then finish past Kammeraad.
Trailing by 2 goals and playing with one less player, the U22 Philippines players seemed to have given up. In the 88th minute, in a quick counter-attack, Zenivio dribbled down the left wing before passing the ball to Elias Mesquita who stretched to score, sealing a 3-0 victory for Timor Leste.
This defeat caused U22 Philippines to be officially eliminated early from the group stage even though there was still one match left to play.
Meanwhile, Timor Leste has achieved its first victory at the 32nd SEA Games, a worthy result for their tireless efforts. In the final match, Timor Leste will have to face the strongest opponent in the group, U22 Indonesia.
