Promoting gender equality and addressing pressing issues for women and children

(Chinhphu.vn) – The workshop to consult and contribute ideas to complete the proposed content and solutions of the Project on Gender Equality and Addressing Urgent Issues for Women and Children (Project 8) in the National Target Program on Socio-Economic Development of Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas (DTTS & MN) Phase II, from 2026 to 2030, organized by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Women's Union, took place this morning (May 31).

Project 8 is one of 10 component projects under the National Target Program on Socio-Economic Development of Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas for the 2021-2025 period, assigned to the Vietnam Women's Union to preside over the implementation (according to Decision No. 1719/QD-TTg dated October 14, 2021 of the Prime Minister ), with the goal of raising awareness, changing gender stereotypes, caring for material and spiritual life, protecting and caring for women and children and achieving gender equality goals.

After 5 years of implementation, Project 8 basically completed 4 groups of key activities; 8/9 core targets achieved and exceeded the plan for the period, of which 4 targets exceeded the plan. The models and activities of the Project have created positive changes in awareness, changing the "thinking and working style" of people in particularly difficult communes and villages, contributing to the locality to effectively solve a number of urgent social issues for women and children and promoting gender equality in ethnic minority and mountainous areas.

Implementing gender equality and solving urgent issues for women and children in the period of 2021 - 2030 in the spirit of Resolution 88/2019/QH14 dated November 18, 2019 of the 14th National Assembly approving the Project on socio-economic development of ethnic minority and mountainous areas in the period of 2021-2030, the Vietnam Women's Union continues to propose contents and solutions to implement the goal of gender equality and focus on effectively solving a number of urgent social issues for women and children in ethnic minority and mountainous areas in the new context, planning 4 specific policy groups: Propagating and mobilizing to change "thinking and working methods" to promote gender equality in ethnic minority and mountainous areas. Supporting to enhance the economic empowerment of women in ethnic minority and mountainous areas. Supporting to solve a number of urgent social issues for women and children in ethnic minority and mountainous areas. Promote the leadership role and substantive participation of women and children in socio-economic development activities; enhance gender mainstreaming capacity for officials in the political system.

The Organizing Committee received 10 thematic articles from experts, researchers, Women's Unions of some provinces and departments and branches in some localities sent to the Workshop, providing more meaningful information in both theory and practice, suggesting gender issues in areas that need attention in the Program for the period 2026-2030, such as family education, parenting education; issues of minimizing the impact of natural disasters and climate change on the lives of women and children; support for access to and use of clean water and sanitation; support for livelihoods and capacity building for women with disabilities in ethnic minority and mountainous areas...

At the Workshop, delegates focused on discussing and clarifying the proposed contents of Project 8 for the 2026-2030 period and suggested new issues that need attention and implementation; recommended specific contents and solutions to integrate gender into projects and contents of the Program for the 2026-2030 period.

Previously, on May 27, 2025, in Hue city, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Women's Union organized a consultation workshop with 30 provinces and cities in the Central, Central Highlands and Southern regions to collect diverse consultation opinions from many perspectives and regions nationwide to help the Union have a basis to complete the proposed contents, solutions and identify gender issues that need attention in Project 8 and in the components of the Program for the period 2026-2030./
