Also attending the meeting were embassy officials; representatives of overseas Vietnamese in the province and leaders of a number of departments, branches and enterprises of the province.
At the meeting, Ambassador Phan Chi Thanh discussed with the Governor of Chiang Mai province the situation of political -foreign relations; economy, trade, investment, tourism between the two countries, as well as the need for cooperation between localities of the two countries in the recent past as well as the two sides celebrating the 10th anniversary of signing the strategic partnership this year (2013-2023).
The Ambassador shared that the Vietnam-Thailand Enhanced Strategic Partnership has developed very well in almost all areas from politics-security, economics , trade, tourism, culture, education, people-to-people exchange, local cooperation...
Vietnam and Thailand currently have 19 pairs of localities signing sisterhood and cooperation agreements with each other. The Embassy is ready to support and connect the province with Vietnamese localities.
The Ambassador suggested that the province study and consider organizing a delegation to learn about and connect with localities in Vietnam that have many similarities, thereby considering signing cooperation agreements with Vietnamese localities.

The Ambassador and the Governor discussed the possibility of establishing an Honorary Consulate in Chiang Mai and the Northern region of Thailand to assist the Embassy in promoting economic and cultural cooperation between the two countries' localities, supporting consular procedures, as well as supporting the citizen protection function when incidents involving Vietnamese citizens occur.
Ambassador Phan Chi Thanh also asked the provincial government to continue supporting and creating more favorable conditions for the Thai community of Vietnamese origin living, studying and working in the province.
Chiang Mai Governor Nirat Phongsittithaworn expressed his pleasure to welcome the Ambassador and his delegation to the province for the first time. The Governor fully agreed with the Ambassador, sharing that Chiang Mai is an important locality in the Northeast region of Thailand, and is one of the provinces that attracts a large number of foreign tourists to visit the province every year.
The current direct flights from Chiang Mai to Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City have facilitated trade and tourism between the two countries, the Governor added. The province always values and will always support the Thai community of Vietnamese origin living, studying and working in the province.

Earlier, on the morning of March 22, the Ambassador and the Embassy delegation visited Chiang Mai University to discuss measures to promote educational cooperation. The Ambassador thanked and appreciated the university for granting scholarships to Vietnamese students in the recent past.
Ambassador Phan Chi Thanh also requested the school to continue creating favorable conditions for Vietnamese students, trainees and lecturers to study and work at the school. In addition, the Ambassador also hoped that the school would consider establishing a research center on Vietnam.
The Ambassador hopes that in the future, the school and other Thai universities will not only teach Vietnamese but also train experts in Vietnamese studies in many fields such as Vietnamese history and culture, etc. to meet the human resource needs for development and cooperation between the two countries.
In addition, the Ambassador also suggested that the school consider organizing an educational exhibition of the school in Vietnam to introduce, promote and attract more students to study at the school in the near future.
Mr. Charin Techapun, Vice President of Chiang Mai University, expressed his pleasure at welcoming the Ambassador to the school and said that Chiang Mai University is having many cooperation programs with Vietnamese schools. He asked the Embassy to support promoting Chiang Mai University to Vietnamese students, hoping to have more Vietnamese students come to Chiang Mai University.
The school is ready to increase scholarships, study, internship and teaching opportunities for Vietnamese students, researchers and lecturers, especially in the fields where the school has strengths such as agriculture, food, medicine, business and information technology.
