At the end of the year, during the Lunar New Year holiday, teachers in Ho Chi Minh City receive 4 payments, depending on seniority, position and school model, some receive nearly 100 million VND.
Schools are administrative units, not production and business units, so they do not have Tet bonuses; but because teachers receive all the payments at the same time at the end of the year, they are often called "Tet bonuses".

TOTAL 4 PAYMENTS
According to Thanh Nien reporters, at this time, most schools in Ho Chi Minh City have almost completed their fiscal year's revenue and expenditure, and are calculating the year-end payments to pay teachers and school staff from now until January 15, 2025, before entering the Lunar New Year holiday.
Statistics from schools show that at the end of this year, teachers of public schools in Ho Chi Minh City will receive 4 amounts of money: Tet gifts from the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, additional income support from Ho Chi Minh City, periodic bonuses applied according to Decree 73 of the Government , and year-end savings from the school.
Every year, teachers in Ho Chi Minh City receive Tet gifts from the City People's Committee for officials, civil servants, and public employees of public service units with an average value of about 1.8 million VND/person.
FIRST YEAR OF RECEIVING BONUS REGIME ACCORDING TO DECREE 73
Ms. Nguyen Doan Trang, Principal of Nguyen Du Secondary School (District 1), said that from July 2024, applying Decree 73 of the Government, in addition to increasing the basic salary, for the first time teachers and employees in public schools will have a bonus regime including occasional and annual bonuses. This bonus will be paid at the end of the year, coinciding with the Lunar New Year holiday. This year's Tet will be the first year that teachers and employees in public schools will receive this bonus from the budget.
According to Ms. Trang, the annual bonus fund stipulated in the decree is determined by 10% of the total salary fund, so each school will receive a different budget, depending on the scale and number of employees. Ms. Trang said that for this bonus alone, depending on the results of the assessment and classification of the level of task completion, teachers will soon receive from 2.8 to 4.2 million VND/person.
Similarly, the principal of a high school in District 1 informed that with the regulation of 10% of the total salary fund, the school has about 460 million VND for bonuses on this occasion. With 83 staff, workers and employees, depending on the results of the assessment of excellent or good completion of the school year's tasks, each teacher can receive about 5 million VND on average. According to this principal, Decree 73 takes effect from July 1, 2024, so 10% of the 2024 bonus fund is calculated on the total amount of 6 months, from July to December.
Additional monthly income
Also in January 2025, teachers of public schools in Ho Chi Minh City will receive additional income for the fourth quarter of 2024 according to Resolution 08/2023/NQ-HDND dated September 19, 2023, regulating the payment of additional income according to Resolution 98/2023/QH15 dated June 24, 2023 of the National Assembly on piloting a number of specific mechanisms and policies for the development of Ho Chi Minh City.
Specifically, teachers who are civil servants in Ho Chi Minh City determine the level of additional income according to the coefficient based on the salary level according to the current rank, position, and position. The formula for calculating the monthly additional income of teachers when completing their tasks excellently is as follows:
Additional income = (Salary coefficient + Position allowance coefficient) x 2,350,000 x 1.5. Thus, if completing the task excellently, a newly graduated level 1 teacher with a salary coefficient of 2.34 will have an additional income of 2.34 x 2,340,000 x 1.5 = 8,213,400 VND/month.
With this calculation formula, depending on the salary coefficient and rank, teachers (grade 1, level 8) will receive the highest additional income of 6.78 x 2,340,000 x 1.5 = 23,797,800 VND/month.
A grade 3 preschool teacher who completes his/her tasks excellently will have an additional income of 7.37 - 17.1 million VND/month. A grade 2 preschool teacher who completes his/her tasks excellently will have an additional income of 8.2 - 17.4 million VND/month. A grade 1 preschool teacher who completes his/her tasks excellently will have an additional income of 14 - 22.3 million VND/month.
Primary, secondary and high school teachers with excellent performance will have an additional income of 8.2 - 17.4 million VND/month. Primary, secondary and high school teachers with excellent performance will have an additional income of 14 - 22 million VND/month. Primary, secondary and high school teachers with excellent performance will have an additional income of 15.4 - 23.7 million VND/month.
This year's Tet will be the first year that teachers and employees of public schools will receive bonuses according to Decree 73.

SAVINGS FROM YEAR-END BONUS EXPENSES
The vice principal of a famous high school in Thu Duc City said that in order to save money, throughout the school year, the entire teaching council implements a policy of saving and limiting expenses. This saving depends on the "steering skills" of the leaders and the consensus of the school community.
To have a "decent" year-end income, a principal of a high school in Tan Phu District shared: "It is necessary to raise awareness in the collective, calling on each member to save a little bit of everything, from electricity, water to stationery... Teachers even suggest that on industry holidays, the school should only organize meetings with candy and fruit, not organize salty parties, to save money at the end of the year to spend Tet with family. If the collective agrees, the school will implement this." This principal informed that it is expected that teachers will receive about 22 million VND for their year-end savings on average.
Ms. Le Thi Thanh Giang, Principal of Tran Van On Secondary School (District 1), informed that the school's year-end income is more than 25 million VND/teacher, about 20% higher than last year. At each position, the difference is about 1 million VND/person. Ms. Giang said that this savings is the collective effort and sense of responsibility of the group, from management positions to teachers and employees. Therefore, the difference is not too big to encourage all members after a year of work, avoiding unfairness.
Sharing about the income during the Lunar New Year, a history teacher of a high school in District 3 said that of the 4 amounts of money that teachers receive on this occasion, 3 are Tet gifts from the city, additional income in the 4th quarter of Resolution 08, and bonuses according to Decree 73, which are according to the regulations applied to teachers at all levels in the city. The income saved at the end of the year depends on the balance of income and expenditure of each school, some schools are lower, some schools are higher. According to a "quick calculation" of the total of the 4 amounts of money mentioned above, this teacher received nearly 100 million VND, after deducting taxes, the actual receipt will be about more than 80 million VND.
Assessment results and additional income must be made public.
The leaders of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City noted that schools must publicize the results of staff and teacher evaluations, the level of increased income, and create conditions for each member of the unit to participate in monitoring. Because near Tet, some units receive many teachers, some units receive few teachers, school leaders need to listen to the opinions of the collective in the unit to choose a suitable adjustment plan for the following years.
Private schools offer the highest Tet bonus of 40 million VND/person
Mr. Bui Gia Hieu, Chairman of the Board of Tre Viet Primary, Secondary and High School, said that the salaries, bonuses and benefits of the school's staff and teachers are regulated from the beginning of the school year. The Tre Viet School system currently has about 210 staff and teachers with a bonus fund of nearly 2 billion VND. Compared to last year, the school's bonus this year has increased, but not much.
According to the school, staff, employees, and teachers who have worked for 12 months or more will receive a full Tet bonus according to regulations. If they do not work for 12 months in 2024, the bonus will be calculated based on the corresponding number of months worked. Specifically, the person receiving the lowest Tet bonus is about 5 million VND, the highest is about 40 million VND. However, the number of people receiving a Tet bonus of 40 million VND is not much, mainly the leaders of the school system.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Do, Principal of Thanh Nhan High School (Tan Phu District), said that every year the school tries to improve the lives of teachers, staff, and workers. In that spirit, the school balances its finances, and it is expected that this year's Tet bonus will not be lower than last year's. With about 150 teachers and staff, the school expects the Tet bonus fund to be more than 1 billion VND.
