Southeast Asia's leading e-commerce platform Lazada has just released the report Closing the AI Gap

This report, conducted in collaboration with Lazada and Kantar, is based on a survey of 1,214 online sellers in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, to explore trends, challenges and opportunities related to the application of artificial intelligence (AI), and to understand their readiness to integrate AI into their business operations.

The study found that online sellers in Southeast Asia have some familiarity with AI, with nearly 7 in 10 (68%) claiming to have some knowledge of AI. This figure is higher in Vietnam, where nearly 8 in 10 sellers (77%), are also higher than the regional average. However, while sellers in the Southeast Asian market believe that they have integrated AI into around 47% of their online business operations, the actual figure is only 37%.

Across the region, Vietnam and Indonesia lead the way with 42% of AI adoption in business operations, followed closely by Singapore and Thailand at 39%. Based on the level of AI adoption in five core aspects of merchant business operations, namely operations and logistics, product management, marketing and advertising, customer service, and human resource management.

This reflects a clear gap between awareness and actual application of AI by sellers. Although this gap is also present in Vietnam (42% actual application compared to 53%), online sellers in Vietnam are still among the top leaders in the region in AI application.

“As the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia, we aim to bridge the gap in AI knowledge and adoption by developing accessible AI solutions that address the unique challenges faced by sellers in different markets, ultimately making the technology more accessible and driving sustainable business growth regardless of the seller’s size or technical level,” said James Dong, CEO of Lazada Group.

To support sellers on their AI journey, Lazada launched the AI Readiness Guide for Online Sellers, which provides strategic guidance based on each seller’s AI proficiency level. The study found that sellers are already leveraging AI solutions on the Lazada platform to improve operational efficiency, demonstrating that Lazada’s continued investments in advanced AI tools are truly helping to streamline e-commerce operations and boost competitiveness.
