Artur Parfenchikov, head of the Republic of Karelia in Russia, said the crashed fighter jet belonged to the 159th Fighter Regiment, based at Petrozavodsk airport. The plane crashed in a forest and caused no casualties on the ground.
Emergency services were at the scene, while authorities quickly launched an investigation into the cause of the tragedy.

The Russian Defense Ministry later confirmed the information, saying the accident occurred while the plane was on a planned training flight. The agency said: "The fighter jet was not carrying weapons and crashed in an open, uninhabited area. The crew was killed."
The Su-30 heavy fighter series was developed and produced by Russia since the early 1990s, mainly serving the export market. The Su-30SM version for the Russian military has been in service since 2013 and is currently one of the main fighters of the country's air force.
To date, it is estimated that more than 630 Su-30 versions have been manufactured. In the Russian Air Force and Navy alone, there will be more than 130 Su-30SMs in service by 2024.
This is not the first training accident in the Russian military this year. In early October, a MiG-31 fighter crashed in Lipetsk province, but the crew ejected safely.
Three months earlier, a Su-34 fighter bomber suffered a landing gear failure during training in Nizhny Novgorod province; the pilots brought the plane to a safe area before ejecting the ejection seat.
