“The claims and insinuations in the article are completely false,” an Alibaba representative said on November 15, adding that the article was based on an anonymous leak that the FT “could not verify for itself.”

Alibaba called it a “malicious PR campaign” aimed at “undermining the recent trade deal between President Trump and China.”

The Financial Times is an international business newspaper based in London, United Kingdom. The FT print newspaper is published daily in London and 23 cities worldwide . Meanwhile, their website FT.com also has a great influence worldwide in many fields, especially in finance and business.

The FT article, published early on November 15, cited a "White House source" accusing Alibaba of allowing the Chinese government and the People's Liberation Army (PLA) to access customer data, including IP addresses, Wi-Fi information, payment records and AI technology.

The FT admitted it could not independently verify the source's content, but published it anyway.

Responding to the article, a spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in the US, Liu Pengyu, criticized the FT for reporting based on documents “without solid evidence”.

He wrote on X that the US “hastily drew groundless conclusions and accused China without basing it on facts,” calling this an “irresponsible” action and asserting that Beijing “firmly opposes it.”

The incident, along with Alibaba's strong reaction, shows the West's efforts to put pressure on Chinese technology companies.
