The Southeast Asian Language Program, implemented by the Ministryof Education of Taiwan over the past six years, has opened more than 700 classes and attracted about 30,000 students. Of these, the number of students registering to learn Vietnamese far exceeds that of other countries in the region.

That is the information provided by Mr. Ta Ly Quan, Director General of Taiwan's Agency for Technology and Vocational Education, at a press conference on April 20, according to Taiwan News.

In 2017, the program opened its first year with 98 classes, focusing on Indonesian, Thai, Malaysian, Burmese and Vietnamese. That number increased to 143 last year, and it expanded from basic to advanced classes.

Mr. Ta said that the number of students studying Vietnamese is even higher than all other language programs combined. The overwhelming demand has allowed schools to build and develop a comprehensive Vietnamese language teaching model. Possessing Vietnamese skills is considered a decisive factor in whether a person can find a job in Taiwan or not.

The reason is that the demand for Vietnamese in the business sector is increasing. Students who are successful in equipping themselves with Southeast Asian language skills, including Vietnamese, are said to give Taiwanese workers an advantage in finding jobs. The Taipei government also highly values the importance of Southeast Asia to the global economy and supply chains, especially when supply chains are shifting away from China after the pandemic.

On the other hand, the number of Vietnamese people studying in Taiwan surpassed 20,000 for the first time in March. According to the Ministry of Education of Taiwan, the number of international students from Vietnam increased significantly after Vietnam opened its borders in March 2022. Statistics show that the number of Vietnamese international students increased by 26% in 2022 compared to 2021, marking part of Vietnam's efforts to train more talents to raise the country's status in the world .
