In the first year after being admitted to university, many students drop out early. This rate is recorded at a fairly high level in many schools and has become a 'headache' for the university's academic affairs council.
Many students actively stop studying.
Statistics from the results of academic processing of many universities show that a large proportion of students actively stop studying not long after being admitted.
Data from a year of study at a private university in Ho Chi Minh City shows that the rate of students receiving academic warnings per semester is up to 20%. This rate varies depending on the field of study, in which the number of students receiving academic warnings in fields related to engineering technology is up to 30 - 40%. Among the reasons for warnings, the school's survey results show that the cause comes from students actively stopping studying and not registering for courses in the next semester, accounting for over 75%.
Although the number is not large, survey results from several large public universities also show a similar situation. Among students who are forced to drop out, most of them are actively not participating in their studies. The main reason is that they were admitted and transferred to another major, another school.
Students need to continue career guidance as soon as they are admitted to university.

According to the credit training regulations, students are given an academic warning after one semester of not registering for a course. If this situation continues, students will be given a second academic warning before being put on the list of students forced to leave school.
A significant proportion of students reserve their study results but do not return afterwards. For example, recently, the Vietnam-Korea University of Information and Communications Technology (University of Danang ) considered forcing nearly 80 students from the 2020-2023 courses to drop out due to not registering for credits in the first semester of the 2024-2025 school year, many of whom did not return to school after the temporary leave of absence expired. The Banking Academy also plans to force 241 students to drop out after the second semester of the 2023-2024 school year, of which nearly 200 cases exceeded the maximum training period of 6 years.
Last year, Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport announced a list of more than 150 students who did not attend the first semester of the 2023-2024 school year. The school's course registration data showed that the total number of registered credits for all of these cases was 0.
HOW TO "KEEP" STUDENTS?
Master Le Phan Quoc, Deputy Head of Training Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, said that the rate of students who are disciplined after their first year at the school is not high, but most of them intend to retake the exam the following year. These cases all have the common cause of choosing an inappropriate wish. The school has many solutions for each discovered case, in which the team of academic advisors plays an important role.
"If in the past, academic advisors were the place where students went to get information and support to overcome difficulties, now academic advisors need to pay attention to students, follow up closely to support them in a timely manner. In reality, there are students who are admitted but do not have much information about their major. In the first year of approaching general subjects, students feel confused. In these cases, it is necessary to have the support of an academic advisor to help students understand the training path clearly," shared Master Quoc.
On the university side, Master Quoc said that reviewing and adjusting the training program to match the entrance standards, creating newness and motivation for students to study is very necessary. "Only in cases where there is no other way, the school will offer solutions for students to consider: changing majors after the first year, studying a double major if the learning ability is good, switching to the work-study system. Because in reality, deciding to stop studying at university to start the admission process again next year is not a simple matter," Master Quoc acknowledged.
Master Nguyen Thanh Tung, Deputy Head of Training, Science Management and International Cooperation Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Culture, said: "The situation of "migration" of students from one school to another is happening in all universities. There are many reasons, including the factor that when registering their wishes, the students themselves do not really understand their strengths and desires."
Schools warn students about academic matters
Master Tung said that the rate of students dropping out of school early used to be hundreds of students, but in the past 3 years, this rate has decreased sharply, to only a few dozen cases each year. "This result is achieved thanks to the solution of taking care of students, considering them as customers of the school and creating the best environment for students to study with peace of mind. Because in fact, besides the case of choosing the wrong goal, choosing while not fully understanding the place they are studying, there are cases of wanting to drop out of school due to the impact of the learning environment. More importantly, career guidance for students needs to be carried out right from the beginning of the course to help students gain more understanding and be more confident in their choice," Mr. Tung emphasized.
Master Nguyen Thi Xuan Dung, Director of the Media Center of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, also acknowledged that every year at universities, a number of first-year students proactively request to change majors, stop studying to re-apply for admission because they are not suitable for the major.
Master Dung believes that to reduce the rate of students wanting to change majors or drop out of school, there needs to be an effort from both students and universities. On the students' side, Master Dung said: "You need to identify your passions and strengths, carefully research your career, school, family conditions and make the right choice for yourself. When entering university, the environment has many changes compared to your high school years, you need time to adapt and get used to the new environment. If you really want to change majors, you need to think carefully, evaluate and clearly identify the pros and cons, and discuss thoroughly with your family to make a decision."
