The list is divided into groups of leaders, innovators, academics and researchers. Among them, CEO, chairman and co-founder of Chinese platform Baidu, Robin Li and 24-year-old billionaire and founder of ScaleAI, Alexandr Wang, are also named.
Besides figures who frequently appear in the media such as Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, the company behind the famous chatbot ChatGPT, or Elon Musk, who co-founded OpenAI and owns the newly established startup xAI, the list of the most influential people in the field also reveals many names that are quite unfamiliar to the public.
The duo featured on the front page of Time's list of business leaders are the CEO and president of Anthropic - the Amodei brothers, Dario and Daniela.
Anthropic was founded in 2021, spun out of a group of former OpenAI “rebels”. Shortly after its launch, the startup raised more than $700 million, of which $300 million came from Google, but this amount only helped the search giant own a 10% stake here.
In industry terms, “anthropic” means ensuring AI systems are aligned with human values. Dario, 40, and Daniela, 36, believe in a more responsible and safe approach to building AI systems than other research labs.
The startup is a pioneer in the research process of “mechanical interpretability,” which allows developers to “brain scan” AI systems, similar to how humans scan their brains, to see what is actually going on inside the algorithm, instead of just relying on the output.
Now, Anthropic has released chatbot Claude 2, which competes directly with GPT-4, OpenAI's most powerful language model.
The list of 100 most influential people in the field of AI voted by Time is posted in detail here.
