Good news about Vietnam-China railway cooperation: Restoring international passenger train operation after 5 years

The restoration of the Vietnam-China international passenger train is an important result of cooperation between the two countries' railway sectors and a bridge to strengthen the friendship between the two peoples.

On the afternoon of May 25, in Nanning, Guangxi, China, the government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and China National Railway Group Co., Ltd. held a ceremony to restore the operation of the Vietnam-China international passenger train route (Nanning- Hanoi ) after more than 5 years of interruption due to the Covid 19 epidemic.

Attending the restoration ceremony were Comrade Di Wei, Deputy General Director of China National Railway Group Co., Ltd.; Comrade Xu Yongke, Standing Member of the Party Committee, Permanent Vice Chairman of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region; Consul General of Vietnam in Nanning and leaders of departments, branches and localities of Guangxi attended the ceremony.

In his opening speech, Comrade Di Wei, Deputy General Director of China National Railway Group Co., Ltd., said that the restoration of the China-Vietnam international passenger train is an important cooperation achievement of the railway industry of the two countries, and at the same time a bridge to strengthen the friendship between the people of the two countries, which will become an important driving force to promote economic, trade and cultural cooperation, contributing to the building of the Vietnam-China Community of Shared Future of strategic significance.

In her speech, Vietnamese Consul General in Nanning Nguyen Thi Huong stated that the Vietnam-China international passenger train route (Nanning-Hanoi) officially operated since January 1, 2009 has become a symbol of comprehensive cooperation, contributing to promoting economic and trade cooperation, cultural exchange and tourism ... between the two countries in general and between Guangxi and Vietnam in particular.

Vietnam and Guangxi (China) have a very special geographical location, "mountains and rivers connected together", Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has repeatedly emphasized that promoting the connection of Vietnam-China strategic transport infrastructure is an objective need. To promote the potential for cooperation and transport infrastructure connection, the leaders of the two countries have determined to soon deploy the connection of 3 standard gauge railway projects between the two countries, including 2 projects connecting to Pingxiang and Dongxing of Guangxi.

The Consul General also expressed his gratitude to the competent authorities and border localities of the two countries for their joint efforts to prepare the necessary conditions to restore train operations after more than 5 years of interruption due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The restoration of train operations is a specific activity to implement the common perception of the leaders of the two Parties and two countries and is especially meaningful when the two countries celebrate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and the year of Vietnam-China humanities exchange.

The Nanning-Hanoi (Gia Lam) passenger train with the number T8701 departs from Nanning Station at 18:05 and arrives at Gia Lam Station at 06:30 the next day; the Hanoi (Gia Lam)-Nanning train departs at 22:20 from Gia Lam Station and arrives at Nanning Station at 10:06 the next day. Initially, the two sides plan to operate two trains per route.
