The 1st Corps Command reported the unit situation to the Front Command and received specific combat missions of the Corps. On the same day, the 2nd Corps Command summoned agency officers and divisions, brigades and regiments to the command post in Tam Hiep hamlet, Xuan Hiep commune, Long Khanh province to receive the campaign missions of the units.
On the afternoon of April 23, 1975, the Party Committee and the Command of the 4th Corps met to determine the campaign for the units in the Corps.
On the same day, units of the 3rd Corps, including the 10th Division, the 273rd Tank Regiment, the 234th Air Defense Regiment and the 7th Infantry Division, arrived at the assembly location in Dau Tieng district to prepare for the Ho Chi Minh Campaign. From April 21 to 23, 1975, the technical weapons units of the 3rd Corps completed crossing the Saigon River and secretly entered the assembly locations on the west bank.
On April 23, 1975, the Ministry of National Defense issued Decision No. 66/QP-QD assigning the General Department of Engineering to take over Cam Ranh base to organize it into a joint base to ensure technical support and regional logistics under the General Department of Engineering.
During this time, in order to serve the main force and technical weapons in the assembly position and prepare for combat, the petroleum troops also quickly deployed facilities to ensure that the troops entered combat. Due to the mobility from afar, the fuel consumption of the main force corps alone reached 11,000 tons, but thanks to timely replenishment from the strategic petroleum force, the total fuel reserves of the corps still reached 9,000 tons.
Serving the Ho Chi Minh Campaign, the amount of materials consumed in the preparation phase (3,717 tons) was much greater than that consumed in the campaign implementation phase (1,826 tons). The petroleum troops organized well the takeover of the spoils of war petroleum facilities with a warehouse system with a capacity of 253,469 tons, collecting 121,228 tons of various types of petroleum.
On the enemy side, on April 23, 1975, Tran Van Huong sent a representative to Tan Son Nhat airport to meet the military delegation of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam to carry out the negotiation intention.
On the same day, the US President declared that “the war in Vietnam is over for America. It is no longer possible to help the South Vietnamese, they must face whatever fate awaits them” and ordered the evacuation of Americans from Saigon.
