(QNO) - On the morning of July 28, the Hoi An Center for Cultural Heritage Management and Conservation organized a scientific seminar "Relics of colonial and imperial prisons in Hoi An - Values of preservation and promotion".
At the seminar, the presentations and opinions of historical - cultural researchers and patriotic prisoner representatives inside and outside the city provided and supplemented documents and historical events related to the relic; identified the values and orientations for conservation and promotion of the value of the relic; especially identified and evaluated the typical values to build a scientific dossier to submit for national ranking of the prison relics in Hoi An.
According to information from the Hoi An Cultural Heritage Management and Preservation Center, Hoi An used to be the provincial administrative center of the French colonial government and the puppet government of the American imperialists. From the end of the 19th century to March 1975, in addition to establishing headquarters, the colonial and imperialist governments also built large-scale prisons in Hoi An to imprison, torture, and physically abuse the will to fight of the revolutionary patriots, soldiers, and patriots of Quang Nam - Da Nang and neighboring provinces who participated in the movements to fight against the French, the Americans, and the puppet governments.
In the early 20th century to 1945, there was Faifo prison (in the current Son Phong ward), in the 1947-1954 and 1955-1959 periods, there was Thong Dang prison (in the Cam Pho ward). In the 1960-1975 period, there was Xom Moi prison, also known as Hoi An prison (in the Son Phong ward). Thong Dang prison and Xom Moi prison have been ranked as provincial historical relics.
Some presentations and opinions at the seminar also focused on introducing the steadfast and indomitable examples of the outstanding sons of Quang Nam who were imprisoned in prisons in Hoi An, including Party and State leaders such as Mr. Huynh Thuc Khang, Comrade Vo Chi Cong, many generations of leaders of the Quang Nam and Da Nang Party Committees, including Comrade Phan Van Dinh - the first Provincial Party Secretary, and many heroic examples of patriotic prisoners...
