Optimizing production, improving dam safety through digital transformation

Trung Son Hydropower Plant is promoting digital transformation in management and operation, from reservoir monitoring, equipment monitoring to internal administration. The application of digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI) has helped the plant optimize production, improve dam safety, shorten data processing time and reduce operating costs, gradually forming a modern, transparent and efficient "digital factory" model.

According to the technical instructions of Circular 13/2023/TT-BTNMT, Trung Son Hydropower Company Limited (TSHPCo) has installed 64 rain gauge stations across the entire reservoir basin in Vietnam and 3 water level gauge stations at the plant. The installation aims to collect and provide complete, accurate and fast data, promptly serving the forecasting of rain, floods, inundation and flexible application in reservoir operation management. With a data transmission frequency of 15 minutes/time and full quality of information and data, parameters on water level, flow and hydrological factors are monitored and analyzed regularly, helping the company make timely regulatory decisions, both ensuring safety for the project and optimizing the power generation process.

Along with that, the PMIS technical management software to digitize equipment maintenance, planning, assigning tasks and monitoring maintenance logs also works effectively, ensuring safe and continuous operation of the generator. The application of PMIS has helped Trung Son Hydropower Plant improve the quality of technical management, minimize incident risks, and optimize the efficiency of plant operations. The online bidding system and IMIS 2.0 software for project investment management have also been applied, helping to increase transparency and save costs (about 10 - 12%). Thanks to the digital application, the plant not only completed the task of generating electricity ahead of schedule, but also helped optimize water resources, ensure downstream safety, and reduce risks for residential areas.

In the field of human resource management, Trung Son Hydropower applies HRMS, supporting the digitization of all employee records, salary management, timekeeping, training and capacity assessment. This system helps the company build a streamlined and transparent human resource, while improving the efficiency of human resource management in the long term. In particular, AI technology has been integrated by the enterprise into many stages such as document search, text editing, E-learning and Microlearning lesson development. Thanks to that, employees save time on administrative work, while having the conditions to study and improve their skills flexibly and effectively.

Officially generating electricity and connecting to the national grid in 2018, by the end of October 2025, Trung Son Hydropower Plant had generated a total output of more than 7.76 billion kWh of electricity to the national grid. According to a representative of TSHPCo, the unit's key goal in the coming period is to build a modern factory model, operating efficiently and safely based on digital data.

“We identify digital transformation as a long-term task, directly linked to dam safety, operational efficiency and business competitiveness in the new context. TSHPCo will continue to expand the application of IoT, Big Data, AI in equipment monitoring and operations, comprehensively upgrading the “digital factory” model,” said Chairman and Director of TSHPCo Vu Xuan Dung.
