After nearly two years of launching, the 5th National Press Award for Anti-Corruption, Wastefulness and Negativity (2024-2025) jointly organized by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, the Vietnam Journalists Association and Vietnam Television has attracted the participation of many central and local press agencies. The award ceremony, which took place on the evening of October 30, was an opportunity to honor journalists who courageously spoke the truth and contributed to cleaning up society.

According to the assessment of the Final Jury, in this year's Award, the press works not only focused on reflecting on the topic of preventing, fighting corruption and negativity, but also propagandized and reflected on the practice of thrift and fighting waste in the whole society, strongly criticized and condemned wasteful acts. Among them, some works were invested elaborately, with new forms of expression. The works of local press agencies were quite good in quality, with deep investment in topics, themes, and ways of expressing rich press works, following the trend of modern journalism.

When waste becomes a "bottleneck" of science and technology

Surpassing hundreds of works, the 5-part series "Fighting waste in the field of science and technology" by reporters Nguyen Thi Hong and Nguyen Van Loc (Auditing Newspaper) won the A Prize - the highest prize of this year's season.

With 5 carefully invested articles, multi-dimensional perspectives, focusing on supervision, auditing and practice, the series of articles has focused on pointing out prominent issues, reflecting the shortcomings and inadequacies in the management and use of funds for science and technology, in the implementation and application of research topics and projects; along with the acts of abuse, borrowing the name of science for personal gain and group interests. More importantly, these are the shortcomings and gaps in management mechanisms and policies - the root causes that make science and technology unable to develop, scientists unable to feel secure in their research, and investment resources for science and technology have not been effective, causing public outrage.

Representing the group of award-winning authors, reporter Nguyen Van Loc shared that this is the first time the Auditing Newspaper has participated in the National Press Award for preventing and combating corruption, waste, and negativity and is honored to receive the highest award in this year's season.

Talking about the idea of ​​​​doing the series, reporter Nguyen Van Loc said: In the cause of industrialization and modernization, our Party has always consistently identified science and technology as the top national policy, an important driving force to promote the country's rapid and sustainable development. The Resolution of the 13th Party Congress affirmed the policy of science and technology as the top national policy, a key driving force to develop modern productive forces...

However, the shortcomings of the mechanism, policies, waste and negativity in the implementation process have become barriers that hinder the development of science, technology and innovation in the country. Based on that reality, the group of reporters realized the need to build and deploy a series of articles to provide a relatively comprehensive and in-depth picture of the practical implementation of science and technology tasks.

According to reporter Nguyen Van Loc, despite the hardships and pressures during the implementation process, with the determination to contribute to effectively implementing the Party and State's major policies and science and technology policies, the group has persistently carried out the project with the support of the Newspaper's leaders, the Editorial Board and functional units of the State Audit, experts, scientists and specialized units from ministries and branches.

The series of 3 articles "Veterans persistently fight against 'Internal invaders'" by author Do Phu Tho , published in the Vietnam Veterans Newspaper, won the A prize - the 5th National Press Award for preventing and combating corruption, waste, and negativity.

Talking about the idea of ​​​​building the work "Veterans persistently fight against 'internal invaders'", journalist Do Phu Tho said: One of the important tasks of the Veterans Association at all levels is to participate in preventing and fighting corruption, negativity and waste. Many examples of veterans in preventing and fighting corruption, negativity and waste have been honored. The Central Committee of the Vietnam Veterans Association has an Inspection and Law Committee as the standing agency for the task of preventing and fighting corruption and waste, and every year there are summary reports and commendations for veterans participating in this movement. From this reality, journalist Do Phu Tho decided to carry out the series of articles "Veterans persistently fight against 'internal invaders'".

According to journalist Do Phu Tho, corruption, negativity, and waste were called by President Ho Chi Minh as "internal invaders" that are no less dangerous than foreign invaders. Over the years, our Party has resolutely, persistently, and tirelessly led this struggle and has achieved many important victories. Veterans, who fought and won in the wars against foreign invaders, are the vanguard, the shock troops on the front lines, persistently fighting against "internal invaders".

From the battlefield and training ground back to everyday life, most veterans have maintained and promoted the nature and tradition of “Uncle Ho’s soldiers”, being exemplary in patriotic emulation movements. In particular, veterans have become the core force in the fight against corruption, waste, negativity and are the “authors” of many fierce and fierce “battles” on the front line against “internal invaders”.

Statistics show that in the past 5 years alone (2019-2024), more than 15,000 veterans have participated in social monitoring and criticism activities, including 2,345 cases of detecting and denouncing corruption and negative acts.

Journalist Do Phu Tho said that in the coming time, the fight against "internal invaders" will still be very difficult and fierce. To win, all sectors and levels need to perfect the legal basis for this particularly important task, immediately amend and supplement legal documents related to corruption, negativity and waste; change regulations on economic and technical standards and norms that are no longer suitable to the country's development practices, ensuring consistency, unity and feasibility. In particular, it is necessary to upgrade the Ordinance on Vietnam Veterans into the Law on Vietnam Veterans, which includes specific regulations on the functions and tasks of veterans in the fight against manifestations of corruption, waste and negativity. At the same time, there must be unity and synchronization in the behaviors and sanctions for handling corrupt, negativity and waste behaviors between Party documents and State documents.

When the fight against waste becomes a national rallying cry

According to journalist Vo Manh Hung, the reality of recent times shows that across the country, there are millions of hectares of land allocated to forestry companies for management, but thousands of hectares are used inefficiently (even many areas are abandoned), while ethnic minorities still lack land for production every year; thousands of real estate projects "holding" land are being "shelved" with unfinished concrete blocks and steel frames; many prime land plots are overgrown with grass, turning into illegal parking lots; some hospitals were invested by the State decades ago with the humanitarian purpose of "examining, treating, and saving people" but have not yet been put into use; there is a flood prevention project that has gone through two terms, but people still have to suffer from flooding while the State has spent tens of thousands of billions of VND...
