At the opening session, President Joe Biden solidified the Democratic nomination for Vice President Kamala Harris by officially "passing the torch" to his deputy in the race for the White House. According to a VNA reporter reporting at the convention, in his speech, President Biden outlined the reasons for voters to elect Ms. Harris as his successor in the White House and called on the Democratic Party to unite in supporting his "deputy", who is facing the opportunity to become the first female president of color and South Asian descent in US history. Previously, President Biden said he was satisfied with his decision to stop running and "pass the torch" to Ms. Harris in the race for the White House. After Mr. Biden finished his speech, Ms. Harris stepped onto the stage and hugged the veteran leader she had worked alongside for the past 3 and a half years, expressing a strong message of solidarity within the Democratic Party. Earlier, she made a surprise appearance at the opening session of the DNC convention, expressing her gratitude for President Biden's contributions. Thousands of delegates gave the Vice President a warm welcome. Ms. Harris entered the DNC convention, which took place from August 19-22, the most important event of the Democratic Party that takes place every four years, in a relatively relaxed mood. Her campaign has broken fundraising records, attracted a large number of supporters in the campaign and turned opinion polls in some battleground states into an advantage for the Democratic Party.
Regarding Mr. Biden's decision to "pass the torch" to Ms. Harris, many Democratic delegates said that this was a difficult but correct decision, for the future of the United States and to bring the possibility of victory for the Democratic Party in the presidential election in November. Speaking to a VNA reporter reporting at the convention, Ms. Audrey Blondin, a delegate from Connecticut, said that in the United States, a generational transition is taking place, the American people want to move forward and candidate Harris will be "a representative of the future, of the new generation of leaders". Sharing this view, Mr. Matthew Blondin, also in the Connecticut delegation, assessed that President Biden's decision to withdraw was not easy but was done at the right time to "pass the torch" to the next generation. Meanwhile, Mr. Jade Velazquez, a delegate from Utah, assessed that Mr. Biden's speech at the convention was optimistic, showing that the Democratic Party's election campaign is always looking towards the future. He said the opening session of the Democratic National Convention was also a celebration of the transfer of campaign leadership from President Biden to Vice President Harris. Most delegates attending the opening session of the Democratic National Convention also expressed absolute confidence in Ms. Harris's ability to win against Mr. Donald Trump, the Republican opponent in the general election in November.
