President Trump considers lifting sanctions on Syria

According to News Week , President Trump announced that he plans to lift sanctions on Syria after the Assad regime collapses.

Speaking at a Saudi Arabian investment forum on May 13, President Trump said he wanted to give the Syrian people "a chance to achieve greatness."

"I will order an end to sanctions on Syria to give them a great opportunity to develop," the White House owner declared.

President Trump made the decision to lift sanctions on Syria after talks with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

"The new administration will hopefully be successful. I wish them luck. Show us something special," President Trump said of Syria.

The lifting of sanctions appears to be part of a broader US strategy to work with Syria's new leadership in an effort to free the country from Iranian and Russian influence.

Mr Trump has previously indicated that he does not want the US to get involved in further conflicts in Syria .

“We’re not involved in Syria. There’s enough of a mess in Syria. They don’t need us involved in everything,” Trump said in January 2025.

Speaking to reporters on May 13, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the easing of sanctions was a positive development, attracting more investment into Syria, and would help the Syrian people recover after more than a decade of conflict and a decade of underinvestment.
