As one of Nha Trang's festivals deeply rooted in maritime culture, the Cau Ngu Festival originates from the belief in worshipping the Whale God – a deity of the South Sea always revered by fishermen as a protector on every fishing trip. Over time, the ritual of worshipping the Whale God has developed into a large festival with many layers of meaning, not only to pray for favorable weather and calm seas, but also to express gratitude to the sea and the solidarity of the fishing community.
The festival typically lasts for three days and nights, around February or March of the lunar calendar – coinciding with the start of the fishing season. Traditional rituals such as the Nghinh Ông ceremony, the Rước Sắc ceremony, the Tỉnh Sanh ceremony, the Tế Chánh ceremony, and the Thứ Lễ ceremony are solemnly performed alongside unique folk cultural activities such as Hò Bá Trạo – a form of folk performance rich in the coastal region's identity. In addition, there is the Tống Na ceremony to bid farewell to evil spirits and bring peace to the fishing village residents.
4. Am Chua Festival
As one of Nha Trang's festivals deeply rooted in cultural and religious traditions, the Am Chua Festival – also known as the Thien Ya Na Festival – is an occasion for the people of Khanh Hoa to express their reverence for the goddess Thien Ya Na, a sacred Mother Goddess considered the protector of the central coastal region. The event takes place from the 1st to the 3rd of the 3rd lunar month every year at the Am Chua historical site (Dien Dien commune, Nha Trang city), attracting a large number of pilgrims and tourists who appreciate Nha Trang's spiritual tourism.
The ceremonial part of the festival is held solemnly with rituals of offering incense, making sacrifices, singing hymns to the Goddess, and flower-offering dances recreating the image of the sacred Mother Goddess. Alongside this, the festive part is lively with a dazzling lion dance procession and lion dance performances from many art troupes from within and outside the province. Visitors also have the opportunity to experience unique folk games such as swinging and Bài Chòi singing – cultural features deeply rooted in Central Vietnam. This is not only a traditional festival of Khanh Hoa but also a precious cultural space, showcasing the spiritual life and Mother Goddess worship of the Vietnamese people.
