The new generation Toyota Vios has been introduced in 6 Southeast Asian countries, starting with Thailand, then Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia, Brunei and most recently Malaysia in March 2023. However, up to now, Toyota Vietnam has not announced an official launch plan, making many users feel impatient. Toyota Vios currently distributed in Vietnam belongs to the 3rd generation, launched in 2014. Up to now, the car has had 3 mid-life upgrades, in 2018, 2021 and 2023 respectively. In the latest mid-life upgrade, the car has been slightly improved in design and equipment.
Changes include LED projector headlights replacing halogen/LED reflectors, a 9-inch central entertainment screen and a number of safety features such as pre-collision warning and lane departure warning. Although the selling price has been adjusted down, Vios still does not meet the expectations of many customers, especially when compared to newly launched competitors such as Honda City and Hyundai Accent. However, the situation in the Philippines is even slower, as the Toyota Vios model here has not been upgraded yet. The car is currently equipped with an old 1.3L engine with lower performance than the version in Vietnam. However, Toyota Motor Philippines has recently received approval for a new passenger car model, using a 1,329cc engine. This engine is identified as the 1NR-VE Dual VVT-i, which was used in the low-end Vios and Avanza. It is worth noting that the familiar chassis code is no longer present in this approval file, raising the possibility that Toyota is preparing to introduce a completely new generation of Vios in the Philippines.
It is worth noting that in this approval document, the familiar chassis code no longer appears, raising the possibility that Toyota is preparing to introduce a completely new generation of Vios in the Philippines. The 2025 Toyota Vios is developed on the DNGA (Daihatsu New Global Architecture) chassis platform with larger dimensions, modern design, and an interior that has been significantly upgraded in both quality and technology. Depending on the market, the new generation Vios will have engine options including 1.2L, 1.3L and 1.5L. Notably, in Thailand and Malaysia, Toyota also offers a sporty Gazoo Racing (GR) version, serving both commercial and competitive purposes in local races. In the Philippines, local press firmly believes that the Vios 3035 will be launched this year. The gradual expansion of the new generation Vios in regional markets could be a positive signal for Vietnamese consumers. If Toyota starts producing or importing this model next year, it will end the 11-year streak of not having upgraded the Vios in Vietnam. In fact, the launch of this new generation Toyota Vios sedan in many markets, including Vietnam, was delayed due to an investigation into safety inspection fraud in early 2023.
Although the new generation Vios has been registered for design copyright in Vietnam since the end of last year, distribution has not been carried out due to legal and inspection reasons. After the procedures are completed and the vehicle's safety is confirmed, bringing the new generation Vios to the Vietnamese market is a reasonable step. In the context of the increasingly competitive B-class sedan segment, especially with the rise of Korean and Chinese car models, Toyota needs a breakthrough product to maintain its position as the "king" of B-segment sales.
