The Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City has just issued document No. 3678, on the issue of piloting a survey on familiarizing preschool children with English according to the needs at preschool education facilities.

Accordingly, the Department requested the Department of Education and Training of districts, Thu Duc City, and kindergartens under the Department to focus on improving responsibility in management and creating conditions for preschool children (3-5 years old) to get acquainted with English to ensure quality and effectiveness. At the same time, it is necessary to pay attention to solutions to support the implementation of good organization for preschool children to get acquainted with English.

"Preschool education facilities, depending on practical conditions, can coordinate with units with real capacity and experience to implement the assessment of children's achievements according to the real needs of parents and caregivers; ensuring compliance with the provisions of Circular No. 50/2020/TT-BGDDT", the leader of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training proposed.

The Department also encourageseducational companies and competent units to develop a quality assurance assessment survey toolkit and implement the appraisal process according to regulations. This will help preschool educational institutions in the coming time have many options in organizing pilot surveys and assessing the results of English familiarization activities for preschool children.

Children at a kindergarten under the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City piloted the use of an English familiarity assessment tool.

Recently, kindergartens under the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City have conducted a pilot survey on English familiarization for preschool children. This survey has a set of survey and assessment tools from an educational unit. The assessment tool ensures criteria such as closely following the instructions of Circular 50 of the Ministry of Education and Training; based on international assessment standards; assessment activities are designed to be friendly, gentle, suitable for the psychological characteristics and age of children.

At the workshop to evaluate the results of organizing English classes for preschool children according to Circular 50/2020/TT-BGDDT held in January 2024 by the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, the reported data showed that in the 2023-2024 school year, Ho Chi Minh City has 449 public preschools out of a total of 474 schools for preschool children to get acquainted with English, a rate of 94.72%. Of which, non-public schools are 50.9% while private independent preschools are less, only 20.7%.

If we calculate the total percentage of preschool children in Ho Chi Minh City who participate in English familiarization programs, the whole city reaches 57.3%.

According to Circular 50/2020/TT-BGDĐT of the Ministry of Education and Training, introducing children to English is based on the voluntary registration of parents.

Ho Chi Minh City currently has more than 180 units coordinating to implement programs for preschool children to get acquainted with English in preschools and other forms.
