At the opening ceremony of the Export Forum event "Connecting international supply chains" - Viet Nam International Sourcing Expo 2023 taking place this morning (September 13), Mr. Vo Van Hoan - Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee said that in 2023, Ho Chi Minh City set out 11 key tasks and solutions to effectively implement the 2023 theme "Improving the efficiency of public service activities, promoting administrative reform and improving the investment environment; promoting economic development; ensuring social security".

In particular, Ho Chi Minh City has always actively and proactively participated in the process of international economic integration, promoted digital transformation, developed green economy and circular economy; focused on synchronously implementing many solutions to support removing difficulties and obstacles for businesses and investors, helping businesses to quickly recover and develop production and business after the Covid-19 pandemic.

In the first 8 months of 2023, the socio-economic situation of Ho Chi Minh City achieved many positive results, the index of industrial production (IIP) of the whole industry increased by 2.8% over the same period, for 4 key industries, the index of industrial production increased by 6%; total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenue increased by 7.6%.

However, Ho Chi Minh City's import-export turnover decreased compared to the same period, in the first 8 months of 2023 it is estimated to reach 63.75 billion USD, down 16.8%, of which export turnover reached 27.54 billion USD, down 15.3% and import turnover reached 36.21 billion USD, down 17.3% over the same period.

Mr. Vo Van Hoan said that Ho Chi Minh City is well aware that, in order to contribute to the sustainable development of the country's economy, the city needs to increase support for the business community to grow by creating conditions for businesses to produce high-quality and competitive goods and services, and also needs to organize trade promotion activities to help businesses promote their products and expand domestic and international consumption markets.

According to Mr. Hoan, the Export Forum program, organized annually by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee and assigned to the City Investment and Trade Promotion Center (ITPC), has been well received by the city's business community and received many positive reviews as an important information channel to support export orientation for businesses.

Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee highly appreciated the Vietnam International Sourcing 2023 program organized by the Ministry of Industry and Trade with the aim of promoting connections between distribution channels, foreign importers and domestic manufacturing and exporting enterprises. "This is a meaningful trade promotion activity to support the Vietnamese business community to have the opportunity to participate more deeply in the international supply chain, gradually expanding the production - consumption chain of products, goods and services with domestic and foreign partners, promoting Vietnamese products with quality and reputable brands, especially in the context of declining export markets in the first months of 2023" - Mr. Vo Van Hoan emphasized.

The annual Export Forum program of Ho Chi Minh City and the Vietnam International Sourcing 2023 Program of the Ministry of Industry and Trade have the same purpose. The combination of the two programs will create double effects and optimize the effectiveness of export promotion activities and support businesses in Ho Chi Minh City in particular and the whole country in general.

Therefore, the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City has agreed to assign ITPC to coordinate with the Department of European - American Markets - Ministry of Industry and Trade to co-organize the "Export Forum 2023" with the theme "Connecting international supply chains" within the framework of the Vietnam International Sourcing 2023 Program.

To continue effectively implementing trade promotion activities of Ho Chi Minh City in the following years, the Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee requested the City's Trade and Investment Promotion Center to continue to closely coordinate with the Department of European - American Markets to continue implementing a number of key contents.

Firstly, evaluate the effectiveness of the implementation of the Program "Export Forum 2023 - Connecting with the international supply chain"; at the same time, research and understand the practical difficulties that businesses encounter, the ability and capacity to meet export standards of businesses when participating in the international supply chain. From there, advise and propose to the City People's Committee solutions to support businesses to expand export markets and participate deeply in the international supply chain.

Second , focus on organizing and implementing many export promotion activities towards key markets and new, potential markets, supporting domestic enterprises to effectively utilize import tax policies from free trade agreements (FTAs), especially new generation FTAs ​​CPTPP, EVFTA,...

Third, strengthen trade connection activities between domestic enterprises and importers and major distribution channels in other countries, while focusing on supporting enterprises to connect with international and domestic e-commerce trading floors, considering this a distribution channel to help expand export markets effectively, helping enterprises save costs, quickly grasp the needs and consumption trends of domestic and international customers.

Fourth, focus on implementing training programs and courses for businesses to improve their international economic integration skills; effectively exploit FTAs ​​to expand export markets; carry out digital transformation in production and business management; support businesses in building brands, improving product quality and competitiveness, aiming for green production, green export and sustainable consumption.

Mr. Vo Van Hoan affirmed that Ho Chi Minh City will continue to accompany and support businesses to overcome difficulties and challenges in the context of declining export markets and will assign the City Trade and Investment Promotion Center to research and proactively coordinate with departments and offices - Ministry of Industry and Trade and promotion units, domestic and foreign business associations to organize more practical export promotion activities, meeting the needs of businesses to expand export markets, helping businesses participate deeply in the international supply chain.
