As a national intangible cultural heritage, the Can Gio Whale Festival is the only traditional festival of fishermen in Can Gio commune held annually to preserve and promote traditional cultural values of the locality, contributing to the building and development of an advanced Vietnamese culture imbued with national identity.

In particular, focusing on preserving the unique cultural features of coastal people; through the festival, promoting propaganda and education on love for the profession, love for the homeland, the sacred sea and islands of the Fatherland.

According to the People's Committee of Can Gio commune, the Festival is associated with the organization of many types of cultural, artistic, sports , folk games, and healthy entertainment activities, creating a joyful and exciting atmosphere among the people; building a spirit of hospitality and mutual assistance among the people; building a civilized urban style, civilized commerce, serving tourists, contributing to the development of Can Gio's tourism industry.

The Whale Festival in Can Gio is usually held on the full moon day of the eighth lunar month every year; it is a traditional and long-standing cultural feature of the coastal people of Can Gio district, Ho Chi Minh City. The festival began in the year of Quy Suu 1913, associated with the worship of Whale, praying for safety when going to sea and wishing for a prosperous and happy life. In 2023, after 110 years of continuous maintenance, the Whale Festival in Can Gio was listed as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
