The People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City has just issued Notice No. 559/TB-VP informing the conclusion of the Chairman of the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City at the meeting of the Special Working Group on reviewing and removing difficulties and obstacles for works and projects in the area, related to the proposal of Vingroup Corporation for the urban railway project connecting the center of Ho Chi Minh City - Can Gio.
Accordingly, the City supports the proposal of Vinspeed High-Speed Railway Investment and Development Joint Stock Company to adjust the starting point of the railway line from Tan Thuan Station to Ben Thanh Station. This is a central location, which is currently acting as an intersection of Metro Line 1 and is an area with high traffic volume, concentrating many commercial, tourism and service activities.
The City People's Committee requested the investor to simultaneously study the plan to organize underground space combined with public space in the Ben Thanh market area. This is to be consistent with the general urban development plan, create a landscape highlight, contribute to promoting tourism and trade activities and improve traffic capacity in the central area.
According to the assessment of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, moving the railway line's starting point to Ben Thanh will help improve the efficiency of exploitation and operation. The line will increase the connectivity between residential areas, commercial centers, economic and administrative centers with the existing metro system, thereby forming a public transport network that is more convenient for people to travel.

Along with that, the Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee assigned relevant agencies and units to urgently update the route to supplement the city's urban railway planning; at the same time, speed up the completion of documents to submit to the Appraisal Council for consideration and approval of the investment policy and selection of investors according to Decision No. 2153/QD-UBND.
Previously, Vinspeed proposed to adjust the high-speed railway route connecting the city center with Can Gio. According to the proposal, the section from Ben Thanh to Tan Thuan will be built underground to reduce compensation, support, resettlement costs and limit impacts on residential areas. The section from Tan Thuan to the center of Can Gio district will continue to follow the previously submitted route.
According to Vinspeed, this adjustment not only increases connectivity with metro line 1 but also creates conditions for the formation of a synchronous urban railway system, helping people easily access, transfer routes and choose public transport instead of personal vehicles. At the same time, this is also a condition to improve the investment efficiency of the entire urban railway system in the future.
With the orientation of developing Can Gio into a large-scale ecological and marine tourism urban area, the railway connecting the center of Ho Chi Minh City - Can Gio is expected to be the driving force to promote the development of the marine economy, expand the urban space to the South and create a new mark for the city's public transport system in the coming period.
