How old is the Earth? And how much longer will humans survive?

DNVN - Earth – the only planet we know of that supports life – has existed for an incredibly long time compared to human history. But exactly how old is Earth? And how much longer can humans survive on this planet?

Tạp chí Doanh NghiệpTạp chí Doanh Nghiệp15/04/2025

Age of the Earth: 4.54 billion years

According to scientists , the Earth was formed about 4.54 billion years ago, which is almost the same time as the Sun and the rest of the Solar System. This number is determined based on methods of measuring radioactive isotopes in ancient rocks and meteorites, as well as the age of the Moon.

However, life on Earth did not appear immediately. The first simple life forms such as bacteria appeared only about 3.5 to 3.8 billion years ago, and modern humans (Homo sapiens) appeared only about 300,000 years ago – a mere blink of an eye in the long history of this planet.

How long will humans survive?

This is a question that science cannot answer with certainty, but there are many factors that affect the long-term survival of humans:

1. Climate change and environment

If humans do not control global warming, loss of biodiversity and environmental pollution, the planet could become unsuitable for human life in the next few hundred to several thousand years.

2. Natural disasters and cosmic catastrophes

Threats from asteroids, supervolcanoes, or cosmic radiation are natural factors that could cause mass extinctions – like what happened to the dinosaurs 66 million years ago. Although the probability is low, the consequences would be dire.

3. Technology and adaptability

Humans today have incredible technological advances, from medicine to energy to space exploration. Some scientists believe that if we can exploit sustainable resources and colonize other planets, our species could survive for millions of years – even outliving life on Earth.

Conclusion

Earth is an ancient planet, and humans have been around for only a short time. While we cannot be sure how long we will survive on this planet, protecting the environment, tackling climate change, and investing in sustainable technology are key to extending the survival of the human race into the future.
