Do flight attendants have to clean up trash?
"The flight attendant made my 22-week pregnant wife get on her knees and pick up the popcorn that our 5-year-old and 2-year-old kids dropped on the floor of the plane. Are you kidding me?", the famous Canadian baseball player posted on Twitter on April 16.
Baseball player Anthony Bass's son drops popcorn on plane floor
According to NBC Los Angeles and Access Hollywood, Anthony is married to Sydney Rae James, the sister of country singer Jessie James Decker. Decker also shared the news via a now-expired Instagram story, saying that her sister was having a high-risk pregnancy and that she had sent her a message of support about the popcorn incident on the plane. Decker also wrote that her "poor sister" broke down in tears and felt humiliated while exhausted with her children, in front of everyone.
Under Anthony Bass's post, a United Airlines representative responded that they had received the complaint and confirmed that they would look into the matter. In a statement a few days later, the Association of Flight Attendants, which represents United Airlines crew members, said: "Our employees and travelers share the same space. We want this space to serve the needs of everyone on board and require strict safety protocols. We can't do it alone," CNN quoted the statement. The airline's union also declined to address Anthony's complaint due to lack of information.
Anthony's post has caused a lot of controversy as many netizens disagree with this point of view. One comment said: "If you are going to feed your child popcorn, you should be ready to pick up the spilled kernels." Another commented: "Pregnant women can still bend down. If you don't want to do that, the best solution is not to feed your child popcorn on the plane." Even an account claiming to be a former flight attendant reacted harshly: "Flight attendants are on the plane to ensure your safety, not to clean up your or your child's trash."
Meanwhile, many people were outraged, saying that it was unacceptable for a flight attendant to force a pregnant woman to kneel and clean up trash, even if it was done by her own child. "The responsibility of the service industry is to satisfy customers, and she is clearly pregnant," one netizen commented.
The important thing is understanding and sympathy.
Regarding the above incident, Mr. Nguyen Viet Cuong, Teacher of Service Skills and Customer Care of Vietravel Airlines Flight Attendants, commented: In principle, there is no regulation or procedure requiring passengers to clean up their own trash, food or other items that they accidentally drop, break or are affected by bad weather factors that affect the flight. However, each country has its own culture, each airline also has a different corporate culture. This determines the communication culture and service skills of flight attendants on the flight.
According to Mr. Cuong, in Vietnam, when such incidents occur, flight attendants will usually assist passengers in resolving the issue. Realizing that if passengers are unable to clean up after themselves, or passengers are special subjects such as the disabled, the elderly, the weak, the visually impaired, etc., flight attendants will be responsible for doing this to maintain the safety and hygiene of the cabin as well as the comfort of passengers on the flight. At the same time, ensuring the safety of all passengers from slipping on trash on the flight in case of an emergency evacuation.
In fact, on some flights, there are many passengers who let their children play and dirty the floor, seats, and other items on the plane. The flight attendants will be responsible for communicating and tactfully reminding passengers to keep an eye on their children to limit their destruction, mischief, and the discomfort of other passengers.
"In this aspect, flight attendants must be well-trained in communication attitudes and situation handling skills, through the codes of conduct of each airline. Above all, flight attendants must be sympathetic, understanding, and able to put themselves in the shoes of others to feel and make decisions," emphasized Mr. Nguyen Viet Cuong.
